]]>Taystee and Tamika
Despite Taystee being central to the plot of season 6, we only got a short glimpse of her past this time round. The backstory showed Taystee and Tamika getting high at a fast food joint when an armed robber comes in and demands Taystee gives him the money from the register. While present-day prison guard Tamika hides under the counter, Taystee thinks on her feet and manages to get the robber to leave with only her knock-off trainers.
Black Cindy’s daughter
Black Cindy struggled through season six with the decision she made to save herself rather than protect her friend. She relates her decision to the time she hid the truth of her daughter’s real father.
Daddy’s business
Daddy is one of the show’s newest and more likeable characters given that she seems to show something which resembles a moral compass. Her backstory shows her keeping company with shifty looking men who pay large amounts of money to hire out young women. Daddy ends up covering for one of the men after a girl gets murdered and the sequence sets up some understanding about the role Daddy has taking in the prison.
Frida’s betrayal
We were all shocked when pragmatic Frida kicked the season off with an attempted suicide, as it seemed so out of character. When we learned that she betrayed her fellow inmates thirty years ago to finish her sentence in minimum security, her fear about going back to max starts to make sense.
The Little Debbie Murderers
Most of the show’s backstories tend to help us sympathize with the characters. When we learn the reason why twisted sisters Carol and Barb are in prison, however, it just makes us feel even more contempt for the characters.

]]>Last month, the OINTB team dropped a teaser trailer with the caption “TO THE MAX” and we feared that the fate of our favorite Litchfield inmates could be maximum security prison. The new trailer suggests that we were right.
Season 6 will follow the inmates after they are carted off to maximum security prisons following the riot. New alliances will need to be made, especially as there seems to be a prison divide based on the color of your prison uniform.
The good news is that some of our favorite characters, who were trapped in Frieda’s bunker, will be returning. Frieda (Dale Soules), Piper (Taylor Schilling), Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Red (Kate Mulgrew), Nicky (Natasha Lyonne), Gloria (Selenis Leyva) and Blanca (Laura Gomez) are all seen in the new trailer at ‘Litchfield max’. Piper’s fiancee Alex (Laura Prepon), however, is nowhere to be seen.
As well as following the day-to-day life of the inmates in their new home, season 6 will also see the Litchfield authorities attempting to press charges against the leaders of the riot. They seem to be pressuring the inmates into giving up their fellow prisoners, but it looks as if they are staying loyal.
If you’re wondering what will happen to Linda from MCC (Beth Dover), she can be spotted in the trailer crying while someone appears to be shaving off her hair. We can also assume that Doggett (Taryn Manning) was caught as she can be spotted in the new prison.
OINTB Season 6 will officially come to Netflix on July 27th.

]]>Unlike the previous seasons, the sixth installment of the series will be released in July rather than June – the 27th of July to be precise. Netflix has not yet released the trailer for the upcoming season, but we can reasonably expect it later this month or at the start of next month.
The teaser that they did release shows an eerily empty Litchfield cafeteria with smashed windows and battered tables. The lighting is dark and ominous and sinister orange smoke lingers in the foreground.
If you look closely, you can see Red’s infamous and evasive chicken perched on the window sill, a sign that the tone of the series is about to totally change. Outside the windows, we can see a prison bus driving off and a distorted voiceover says: “This is a whole new world.”
Season five finished with the prison rioters being viciously rounded up on the lawn before being herded onto separate prison buses. Pensatucky and Chang have escaped and MCC’s Linda Ferguson is mistaken for one of the prisoners after both Caputo and Boo reject her plea for help.
In Frida’s underground bunker, 10 of Litchfield’s inmates, including a recently engaged Alex and Piper, are awaiting the reaction of the riled up CERT officers who have discovered their whereabouts.
We don’t know what’s going to happen next or how many of the ten will make it out alive. The tagline from the teaser “to the max” suggests that the inmates will not be let off lightly. Their fate might potentially be serving the rest of their time in a maximum security prison. Whatever happens, it looks like things are heating up.

]]>Red’s rebellion, Season 5
We got quite a few glimpses of Red’s life in America before prison in the earlier seasons of OINTB. In the latest season, however, we learn a bit about her life in Russia and how she was part of an underground rebellion against Russia’s oppression of alternative Western culture. We love young, feisty and passionate Red.
Lorna’s obsession, Season 2
Lorna’s backstory is memorable because it made us totally rethink how we saw Lorna. Prior to the episode, we sympathized with a loved up Lorna, fantasizing about her fiance on the outside, Christopher. Her backstory reveals not a love story, however, but the truth that she is actually in prison for her obsessive stalking of Christopher. She went from sweet to psycho in under an hour, and we ended up loving her even more.
Poussey’s last night in NYC, Season 4
The scenes of Poussey’s last night in NYC after she loses her friends and finds herself in a crazy club before riding on the back of a monk’s bicycle are bittersweet. It made us smile watching one the show’s favorite characters caught up in the wonder of New York City, but made our hearts sink when we remembered her unjust fate.
Leanne’s rebellion, Season 3
Leanne’s backstory of her life in a strict Amish community took us all by surprise.
Rosa’s bank heist, Season 2
This is by far my favorite backstory. Prior to Rosa’s episode, we had only ever seen her looking weak and pitiful. As it turned out, before prison she was a bank robber addicted to the adrenaline of the heist. Young Rosa is passionate and wild and completely changed the way we saw prison Rosa for the rest of the season.
