Anna Paquin talked about her role in The Irishman.

The Oscar-winning actress couldn’t be more pleased with her role in the Martin Scorsese directed mob film.

Despite the social media uproar, Paquin loved her role even though she only said seven words.

The veteran actress who played Robert De Niro’s daughter in the Netflix drama said, “It’s very endearing when people think they are fighting a fight on your behalf, but not really necessary. I’m incredibly happy. I have such a tiny little role in the film, and I was so excited to get to be a part of it in the first place, and all of this [awards recognition] is just the icing on the cake.”

It basically all came down to seizing the opportunity to work with the acclaimed filmmaker.

“I just can’t picture any actor on the planet going, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to work with Martin Scorsese and every single living legend in our field.'”

In an almost unprecedented move, Netflix has released viewership data for Martin Scorsese’s mob epic The Irishman.

The film launched on the streaming giant on November 27 after it had a limited theatrical release. According to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, more than 26 million global accounts (26,404,081, to be exact) watched at least 70% of the Golden Globe-nominated mobster film in its first seven days on the platform.

Sarandos added that Netflix expects about 40 million account holders to watch the film over its first 28 days.

The Irishman, which stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci in the drama detailing the life of mob hitman Frank Sheeran, garnered a Golden Globe best drama nomination earlier this week.

“It’s a good mark of quality — both for the industry and for consumers, meaning you want to be at that place where all the good stuff is happening,” Sarandos added. “Creators mostly want to be in the culture… and Netflix can do that like nobody else.”

And it all has to do with all that de-aging technology.

“You could say, ‘This is a long story, you can play it out over two seasons’ — I saw somebody mention that,” the director said. “Absolutely no. I’ve never even thought of it. Because the point of this picture is the accumulation of detail. It’s an accumulated cumulative effect by the end of the movie — which means you get to see from beginning to end [in one sitting] if you’re so inclined. A series is great, it’s wonderful, you can develop character and plot lines and worlds are recreated. But this wasn’t right for that.”

And in case you haven’t watched it yet — do it!

Recently, Martin Scorsese caused a ruckus when he made a dig at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He argued that Marvel films are “not cinema” and has since divided actors and directors regarding the cinematic status of the enormously popular superhero flicks.

In his original comments, Scorsese told Empire: “I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.”

He added: “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn immediately jumped to Marvel’s defense alongside MCU star Karren Gillen and X-Men director Joss Whedon. Since then, Iron Man director Jon Favreau has taken Scorsese’s side, saying the acclaimed director can “express whatever opinion they [Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola] like.” Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch has also jumped to Scorsese’s defense, supporting his claim that Marvel is taking over everything. He clarified: “We don’t want one king to rule it all and have a monopoly.”

So is Scorsese right? Is Marvel just mainstream pseudo-cinema that is monopolizing the box office? In some ways yes, his comments are fair and as an acclaimed auteur, he has earned the right to make them. If we compare his masterpiece The Goodfellas to the Avengers CGI fest, we can see why Marvel might come out looking like less than “cinema.”

The thing is, cinema has grown to be so much more than an art form for the elite. It has grown to be a common source of entertainment – a way to bring people together. Marvel’s popularity is evidence of this. Hundreds of millions of people attend Marvel screenings each year and it’s not just for the flashy fun of the action. To use Scorsese’s own words, Marvel films convey “emotional, psychological experiences” and it is our investment in the characters that drives the franchise to keep creating.

And so, in a nutshell, Scorsese as an artist has earned the right to question Marvel’s status in cinema. As an audience, however, we have also earned the right to redefine the status of cinema based on our consumption. And collectively, we have consumed an awful lot of Marvel.

The first trailer for The Irishman dropped during The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday night.

The first look at Martin Scorsese’s Netflix film The Irishman finally gives us a look at the film’s characters with Robert De Niro as mob enforcer Frank Sheeran, Joe Pesci as the ruthless crime syndicate boss Russell Bufalino, and Al Pacino’s Jimmy Hoffa.

The film follows Sheeran from his mid-20s to his 80s with the aid of de-aging visual effects technology.

De Niro told Fallon: “They didn’t want it to get in our way. And Marty didn’t want that … They had all kinds of cameras taking pictures, a special camera photographing us,” De Niro said of the de-aging process.

The long-gestating passion project for Scorsese was written by screenwriter Steven Zaillia (Schindler’s List, Gangs of New York). It also stars Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, and Jesse Plemons.

The Irishman is coming to Netflix on November 27.

Back in January, Netflix revealed that they are working on a Bob Dylan documentary which will be directed by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

Now, the streaming service giant announced that the documentary, titled Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese, will be available on their platform on June 12.

Besides being available on Netflix, the documentary will also get a limited release in theaters around the world starting June 11. According to Variety, 20 cities will host the projections for the film including London, Paris, Nashville, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Houston, Portland, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sydney, and New York.

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese will be centered on Bob Dylan’s 1975 tour Rolling Thunder Revue which saw him taking a trip across the United States alongside his close friend Roger McGuinn, Joan Baez, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Bob Neuwirth and Allen Ginsberg. The tour has gained a cult status since and is considered to contain some of Dylan’s best live performances.

Netflix also shared synopsis and a poster for the documentary as well.

“Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese captures the troubled spirit of America in 1975 and the joyous music that Dylan performed during the fall of that year. Part documentary, part concert film, part fever dream, Rolling Thunder is a one of a kind experience, from master filmmaker Martin Scorsese.”

There was hardly a better and more productive director/actor duo in the last two decades than Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. The two made five movies together, all of which went on to become successful both in the box office and with the critics.

Now, Scorsese and DiCaprio are ready for another run, since it was recently announced that they will reunite for an adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling novel Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.

The 75-year-old director and 43-year-old actor were linked to the project for some time now, but the official confirmation came just recently. The filming of the movie is currently scheduled to start in the summer of 2019.

“When I read David Grann’s book, I immediately started seeing it, the people, the settings, the action, and I knew that I had to make it into a movie. I’m so excited to be working with Eric Roth and reuniting with Leo DiCaprio to bring this truly unsettling American story to the screen,” said Scorsese in a statement.

The book Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of series of murders of people belonging to the Native American tribe Osage Nation after oil was found on their land in the 1920s. After the number of deaths gets alarmingly high, the newly formed Federal Bureau of Investigation takes over the case, trying to find those responsible for the crimes.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s first collaboration was the epic period drama Gangs of New York from 2002. The duo then went on to work on The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street, with their movies receiving 31 Academy Awards nominations and winning nine of them. They also worked together on 2015’s short film The Audition.
