]]>This decision doesn’t come as a shocker because it’s been rumored HBO won’t renew The Idol before the first season even ended its run. A source close to the production told Page Six that the show was conceived as a limited series, but HBO was quick to deny those rumors, saying that they still haven’t made a decision on a second season.
HBO’s executives changed their tune in the meantime and decided to cancel The Idol for good. Network’s spokesperson thanked the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work in an official statement and said they’re pleased by the strong audience response.
The Idol told the story of up-and-coming pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), trying to make a comeback after a nervous breakdown, but only sinking deeper into darkness after starting a complicated relationship with a sinister nightclub owner Tedros (The Weeknd).
The series also starred Troye Sivan, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria.

The Idol will answer these questions when it arrives at HBO on June 4, but this won’t be its grand premiere. The provocative musical drama will be screened out of competition at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival next month.
In addition to playing one of the lead roles, The Weeknd co-created The Idol alongside his longtime collaborator Reza Fahim and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson. The show’s supporting cast includes Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Kim, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, and Hank Azaria.
