Jordan Peele made history last year when he became the first African American to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his masterpiece Get Out. That year, Peele also received nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. His psychological thriller was a huge success at the box office and put Peele on the radar in a huge and exciting way.

Earlier this year, Monkeypaw Productions released Peele’s second psychological thriller, Us. The movie also received great critical acclaim and starred Lupita Nyong’o, who gave a phenomenal Oscar-worthy performance. In 2020, he will release Candyman, which will follow in the footsteps of his previous features.

But what is it that makes Jordan Peele thrillers so… horrifying? There is minimal gore and there are no ghouls or monsters. Instead, the true horror of Peele’s thrillers lies in the horrors that exist in modern society.

Peele uses horror as a tool for bringing these underlying problems to the surface. At the core of the suspense in Get Out is the looming presence of institutionalized racism and in Us, Peele uses uncanny mirroring to depict the arbitrary division of class.

Speaking with Digital Edition, Peele explained the “social thriller” characteristic of his movies: “I define “social thriller” as thriller/horror movies where the ultimate villain is society.”

He continued: “The next movies will be very different, I think, in terms of how on the nose they are. I wanna be a little more allegorical and cinematic. But at the heart of all my future movies is this idea of giving (people) something fun but addressing some sort of innately human demon we’re dealing with every day. “

This is certainly apparent in Us, where the “villains” below suffer at the hands of those above. A downward escalator signifies the “social ladder” that working-class Americans are encouraged to climb. The ladder may be there, but that doesn’t make it any easier to climb when the odds are against you.

Having recently just re-watched both Us and Get Out, I now regard Candyman as one the most anticipated movies of 2020. As a director, Peele masters suspense and horror in a way that few others can. As a writer, he highlights underlying social issues which are more horrifying than any monster in the Insidious franchise.

The news that Get Out director Jordan Peele would be creating a new movie was well received to say the least. Now, Peele has shared the first chilling trailer for the feature, which is titled “Us.”

The trailer begins with a family going on holiday, which starts out pretty ordinary until one of the children wonders off. Following his scolding, creepy things start happening and then a mysterious masked family silently show up outside the house one night.

At this point, it looks as if the movie will be another ripoff of The Strangers, but naturally, we expect more from Peele. Our faith pays off when it is revealed that the family of strangers are in fact identical to our protagonists. The son gasps: “They’re us.”

It is not clear from the rest of the trailer why this has happened and what the impostors want. What is clear, however, is that the movie will be a terrifying psychological thriller with quite possibly more twists and turns that last year’s Oscar winning script Get Out.

You can watch the bizarre and chilling first trailer here:

Us will be released in cinemas in March. Let us know if you will be watching in the comments below.

Jordan Peele’s satirical horror Get Out was awarded “best feature” at the pre-Oscar Film Independent Spirit Awards. They have successfully predicted the best picture winner at the Oscars four years in a row. Could Get Out be the fifth?

Jordan Peele also won “best director” in spite of the fact that this was his first writing and directing project. For those of you who didn’t catch the movie last year, Get Out is a psychological horror story about a black man visiting his white girlfriend’s family for the first time. He begins to get the impression that something is not right and the plot quickly unfolds to reveal that something more sinister is going on in the family. The movie contains some great horror and is genuinely funny at times.

The racial commentary implicit within the undertones and at the forefront of the movie adds a deeper level to the deliberately induced discomfort we feel watching. Peele clarifies his original intentions when making the movie claiming that:

“This project didn’t start as a statement – it began as me wanting to make a film in my favorite genre… mind-bending horror.”

It really is a mind-bending horror and the low-budget thriller is certainly deserving of the award. We are looking forward to finding out whether the movie does equally as well at the Oscars.
