“It feels like a gigantic celebration, like a hot air balloon going up in the sky,” Soloway said.
“I think because of all the chaos — and all of the ways in which our show had to re-examine who we were — having a musical gave us a new path forward, a new reason to be. This isn’t just like putting a button on the series,” she said. “It’s kind of like transitioning — twirling and flying into a new direction.”
She also revealed that she’s definitely up to reunion the Pfeffermans played by Judith Light and her on-screen children played by Gaby Hoffman, Amy Landecker, and Jay Duplass.
“I would love to do a sequel, a tri-quel, a Pfefferman family cruise for the Jewish high holidays, whatever! I’ll do anything.”
Variety was first to report the story.

Ever since Jeffrey Tambor, who played the titular matriarch, exited the revolutionary Amazon series following allegations of sexual misconduct, fans have been wondering how series creator Jill Soloway would end the Pfefferman’s journey.
The final episode will follow the Pfefferman family — Shelly (Judith Light), Sarah (Amy Landecker), Josh (Jay Duplass), and Ali (Gaby Hoffmann) as they try to come to terms with their loss.
Amazon’s official synopsis promises “a dazzling two-hour movie musical fantasia. When the Pfeffermans face a life-changing loss, they begin a journey hilarious and melancholy, brazen and bold. As they face this new transition, they confront grief and come together to celebrate connection, joy, and transformation.”
Fan favorites including Kathryn Hahn, Trace Lysette, Cherry Jones, Tig Notaro, Melora Hardin, and Rob Huebel are also set to appear in the finale.
The musical finale was directed and written by Soloway with original music by her sister and executive producer Faith Soloway.

]]>The Amazon series about the Pfefferman family isn’t ending, it’s “transitioning in a musical,” said series creator Jill Soloway to reporters during the executive session that the Television Critics Association winter press tour Wednesday.
“We would never have wanted to take a special, incredible show like that and just end it unceremoniously. It was Jill’s idea to do a musical movie,” Amazon Studios chief Salke told reporters during the session. “We signed off on that idea, trusting her that she would come up with something incredible. We all sat in the front row of a musical run-through of this movie where we were crying. It is really special.”
The musical finale will bring the story “full circle.” The unconventional creative choice also allowed the creator to overcome Jefferey Tabor’s exit and the subsequent absence of his character, Maura Pfefferman’s absence.
“When everything went down last year and we lost Jeffrey Tambor, we went through so much as a family that felt like this very emotional … there are no words,” she said. “There was no way, really, to just go back to a plain old season five.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter Soloway’s sister had already been putting songs together for a potential Transparent musical, which will now be put to use for the series musical ending.
