Sunday’s Game of Thrones void was filled, much to fans’ delight, with a two-hour documentary on HBO’s acclaimed fantasy drama.

The documentary from British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay took fans behind the scenes of Game of Thrones’ cast and crew’s journey of making the eight and final season of the series.

Game of Thrones: The Last Watch chronicled David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s making of the final season of Game of Thrones, which however divisive, is nonetheless epically beautiful.

The docu really pulls the curtain on the show’s immense creative work, which includes a team of costumes, hair, makeup, and special effects people among others.

David Nutter, who directed three of season eight’s episodes, gave the creative team their much deserved credit saying he’s simply “a conductor of fine musicians who basically waves his arms around.”

According to production designer Deborah Riley, each hour filmed during the eight and final season of Game of Thrones cost $15 million or more. “All we were doing in seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7 were training for season 8,” Riley said.

The Last Watch also gave fans a look at the moment Kit Harington, aka Jon Snow, discovered that he was to slay his love and Queen, Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. The footage of that final table read shows both actors get quite emotional of the fate of their on-screen love.

What will probably go down as the most legendary battle in TV history aired on HBO on Sunday night. We’re still processing the shock of how it all went down but mostly, we’re just relieved that most of our favorite characters made it. More on that later but first, here’s a tribute to the mighty that have fallen.

Theon Greyjoy

Theon has done well to survive for as long as he had. His dying moments were protecting Brandon Stark, who reassured him before he said goodbye that he is indeed a good man.

Lyanna Mormont

Lyanna died saving countless soldiers from the wrath of a white walker giant. Her final moment was as heroic as we would expect from the brave young lady.

Ser Jorah Mormont

Ser Jorah died protecting his queen, moments before the battle was over. He died in her arms in one of the saddest deaths of the episode.

Lord Beric

Lord Beric may have once been on Arya’s kill list but he died saving her from the army of the dead. This time, the Lord of Light did not bring him back because he had served his purpose.

Edd Tollett

One of the few brothers of the Night’s Watch remaining died saving Samwell Tarley, who amazingly survived to live another day.

The Night King

The big bad bit the dust in the episode’s climax when Arya stabbed him with a Valerian dagger.

Melisandre

The Red Woman showed up moments before the battle to protect the armies with her fire magic. Once her work was done, she stepped out into the snow to shed her mortal coil.

The battle we’ve all been waiting for has arrived but please, bear with us while we catch our breath.

The epic face-off between the Night King and pretty much everybody on Game of Thrones left that we care about took 55 days to film. If it was even half as good as we were expecting it to be, we wouldn’t have been disappointed. Nothing on TV could have prepared us for the scale and sheer brutality of the battle though, not even season 6’s infamous “Battle of the Bastards”.

The first shocking sight occurs moments after Melisandre surprises everyone by making an unexpected appearance and lighting the Dothraki’s swords on fire. The fearless herd launch themselves into the army of the dead and from a distance, we see each and every light extinguished. If each flame represents a Dothraki soul, we can be sure that there is not a single Dothraki warrior left. The rest of the armies watch in horror as they realize that the same fate lies ahead of them. No one sums it up better than the Hound who later gives up and exclaims: “This is death. We cannot beat them.”

But what do we say to death? Not today. Arya was the true hero of the episode and we got to see some amazing footage of her incredible fighting skills. The scene where she scurries silently down the crypts was a nice throwback to the season one scenes where her dancing instructor tells her to catch a cat. This time around, Arya is impossibly stealthy and if she so much as breaths too loud, the White Walkers will swarm on her and she will not make it. Of course, Arya is far stealthier than a cat and with a little encouragement from Melissandre, it is the faceless Stark who saves the day.

Every scene in the 82-minute episode was so action-packed and tense that we couldn’t possibly pay homage to them all. There were multiple moments throughout the battle that we were forced to consider the real possibility that Winterfell would not win. One of them, for example, was the terrifying scene where the Night King resurrects every fallen soldier, creating a whole new army of Dothraki and Unsullied corpses.

This happens shortly after Daenerys rains fire on the Night King, only to realize that he too possesses the power of the unburnt. The only upshot at this point is the thought of Cersei’s face in the South when the Night King comes to take her throne. Fortunately for Westeros, Arya is as brave as Lyanna Mormont, who heroically threw herself at an undead giant to save her army. At the very last moment, the young Stark takes a knife from the Night King only to shatter him and his armies with her Valerian blade.

So yes, we’re having a hard time processing the fact that the living defeated the White Walkers and accepting just how many of our beloved characters survived. Most surprising of all was the survival of both Grey Worm and Missandei in addition to Brienne of Tarth, who many people pegged for a heroic death in the episode. Even more impressive though is the fact that Samwell Tarley is still alive and kicking, despite being a frightened rabbit in the headlights. Instead, we said goodbye to Lyanna and Gora Mormont, Lord Beric and Theon Greyjoy, a departure that has been a long time coming. Ultimately, we want to shake hands with the writers and director for sparing the lives of Jon Snow, Arya, Daenerys, Sansa, Tyrion, Jamie, Brienne, and Gendry. We really didn’t see that coming.

Finally, the episode concluded with Melisandre walking out into the snow and shaking her mortal coil. Her death is symbolic of the journey’s end for all those who sacrificed themselves in the big battle. Every character’s path has led them to the moment they were needed the most and now, there is nothing left to do. Well, there’s nothing to do except fight Cersei’s armies in the South, if anyone has the energy for that.

Ultimately, no review will ever be as well-written and well put together as “The Long Night”. All we can do is give a big bloody well done to everyone involved and give a hearty thank you for what must surely be the most iconic battle in TV history. And to whoever allowed Arya and our other beloved lords and ladies to survive, we bend the knee to you.

In the run-up the season 8 Game of Thrones finale, it seems like every other article is about the show. If you don’t like it, then that’s too bad – winter is here boys and girls.

Maisie Williams has quickly become everyone’s favorite Game of Thrones star and in an interview with Vogue, she has revealed her favorite part of working on the show and which character she is rooting for to sit on the Iron Throne.

When asked about her favorite memory on set, she said: “Just working with Sophie [Turner]. She makes me laugh until I actually cannot breathe. All the way through shooting, we’ve clung to each other, and our friendship has just gotten better and better as we’ve gotten older.”

When asked who she would put on the Iron Throne, she backed Sophie Turner again and replied: “Sansa. She’s always really wanted it, even though it’s never been within reach. Plus, she’s a redhead.”

The second episode of the final season has aired and we still haven’t received the epic battle we were promised. Instead, we get something even better – a steamy romance scene and Podrick singing. All of our favorite characters wait in Winterfell for the army of the dead to arrive, interacting in ways they have never done before.

Firstly, we watch Jamie become accepted into Winterfell thanks to Brienne of Tarth who steps up to defend his honor. He then makes amends with Brandon Stark, who reminds us that if Jamie had not have pushed him out the window seven seasons ago, he would not have become the Three-Eyed Raven. Later in the episode, Jamie and Tyrian discuss the absurdity of them defending the North and toast to the perils of self-betterment.

The Lannister brothers are then joined by Brienne and Podrick who gather around the fire to have what could be their last ever drink. Tormund then appears to provide some much-needed comic relief and then shares what may just be the most bizarre story of the entire series. The strange scene is followed by one of the most emotional moments yet – Lady Brienne finally becomes a knight. The fierce and powerful woman is not one for smiling but when she receives her new title from Jamie himself, she beams from ear to ear while we wipe away our tears.

There were too many tender and powerful moments to mention but one that we cannot ignore was the coupling of Arya and Gendry. It’s not just that we have been rooting for them romantically, it’s that what we watched was Arya embracing the womanhood and humanity that she has been forced to suppress for the last few seasons. In the moments she embraced Gendry, she was no longer “a girl with no name” but Arya Stark, a strong and powerful woman allowing herself to give in to her human desires.

Arya may have got her big moment but many of the other interactions between characters were so ordinary that they became deeply intimate. Watching our beloved characters engage for what could be both the first and last time makes waiting for the next episode even more distressing. The battle ahead will be the greatest yet and we all know that by the end of the episode, we will have to say goodbye to some of our favorite characters on the show. These precious moments before the battle make the prospect of losing any one of them all the more upsetting.

Lastly, we can’t recap without at least mentioning Jon Snow’s big reveal to Daenerys. Kudos to Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington who played the incredibly challenging scene perfectly. When Jon reveals the news, Daenerys frets about her claim to the throne while the wholesome Jon looks wounded that she is not more concerned about the fact they are lovers and related. Of course, incest is not outside of the norm for a Targaryen and Khalisi reminds us that she has yearned for the throne her entire life. Most of all though, we can’t help but think that the big reveal was just really bad timing. Before either could process the news, the horn sounds and the White Walkers appear. From this moment until the final episode concludes, no one is safe.

It’s official, summer is over and winter is here. If you haven’t seen the new episode yet, get off the internet ASAP because spoilers are everywhere (including in this article).

Despite the dramatic cliffhanger that season seven finished with, there was no big battle season in the season eight premiere. Instead, tensions ran high and future rivalries were set up. It turns out that the big war is not going to be as simple as everyone vs. the White Walkers and that Cercie isn’t the only one who is less than pleased about Deanarys becoming a key player in the game of thrones.

Sansa Stark is the first potential rival of the Queen and questions Khaleesi on her decision to bring so many men to Winterfell, where supplies are low. When Sansa asks what dragons eat, Deanarys curtly replies “they eat whatever they want”. Tensions rise and throughout the rest of the episode, characters are constantly reminded that the trust of the North needs to be earned.

More worryingly, the lovely Samuel Tarwell is also set up to be an enemy of the Queen. When he discovers that she has killed his father and brother for not bending the knee, his tearful expression makes us question her rash decisions. Could it be the case that Deanarys is being driven wild with power and that she is doomed to wind up just like her father, the Mad King? Samuel certainly suspects so and consequently pledges his allegiance to Jon Snow, before revealing who his real parents are. Jon Snow is shocked after discovering that he has been lied to his whole life, but the question of what he does next is uncertain.

Other episode highlights include Theon finally getting his redeeming moment when he saves his sister, Yara Greyjoy from his uncle’s hands. The reunion between Arya and Gendry was also a delight and there seems to be hope for a possible romance between the unlikely pair.

Lastly, the episode’s ending was not what we expected. Instead of ending with a fierce confrontation with the White Walkers, the episode ends with Bran and Jamie making some pretty intense eye contact. Will Jamie, a completely changed man, finally have to answer for the crimes of his past? Regardless of what happens next, the brief moment of eye contact was a curious way to end the season 8 premiere.

Anyway, tensions are rising and we are eager not just for the epic battle between the living and the dead, but to find out whether the lords and ladies will manage to abandon their titles to protect the realm or if petty differences will get the better of them.

HBO is putting in a real effort to make the eighth and final season of their popular fantasy show Game of Thrones an unforgettable event. After recent marketing campaign, during which they organized a scavenger hunt on replicas of Iron Throne scattered around the world, the network now announced they are preparing a feature-length documentary dedicated to the series.

Titled Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, the two-hour-long documentary will chronicle the filming of season eight and is set to air on Sunday, May 26, or one week after the series’ finale. British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay (The Great Hip Hop Hoax) will helm the project.

“Made with unprecedented access, Game of Thrones: The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers,” said HBO in a statement. “Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world , and then have to say goodbye to it.”

The first episode of Game of Thrones‘ final season is set to air on HBO on April 14, 2019. Unlike previous seasons, this one will only have six episodes.

While GoT fans will surely be sad to see their favorite series wrap up, this won’t be the end of World of Westeros on TV screens.  HBO is currently working on a prequel series set “thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones” which will “chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” The prequel will enter production at some point in 2019.

It may seem like the wait for season eight of HBO’s popular fantasy series Game of Thrones will never end, but here we are, just a month or so from the premiere. And to make things even better, we finally have the first full trailer for what would be the show’s final six episodes.

The trailer dropped on March 5th, and spoiler alert: “It’s epic.” The 2:02 minutes long video contains everything you would expect from Game of Thrones including dragons, heart-stopping action, your favorite characters having inner conflicts and on top of that, some pretty insightful hints about the story.

One of the things that the trailer reveals us is the destiny of Tormund Giantsbane, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch Dolorous Edd, and the Lightning Lord Beric Dondarrion, all of whom looked like they will meet their end once the Night King destroyed The Wall. As it turns out, all three men survived the event, and are ready to fight once again. Also, the trailer hints that Jon Snow will finally get to ride a dragon in season eight as the fans long suspected and that Jaime Lannister might have change of hearts and join the fight against the White Walkers.

Check out the GoT season eight trailer below.

The final season of Game of Thrones will be out on April 14th. Unlike the previous seasons, this one will only have six episodes, but it is expected that all of them will be longer.

Final touches are being put on the eighth and last season of HBO’s fantasy hit series Game of Thrones, and members of the show’s cast are now beginning to share their experiences from the set. The latest one to do so is Maisie Williams, who portrays the character of Arya Stark on the show.

In a recent interview, Williams discussed the final season of Game of Thrones and decided to offer some details about her character’s last scene, which she described as “beautiful” and “perfect.”

“I ended on the perfect scene. I was alone–shocker! Arya’s always bloody alone,” the 21-year-old actress shared. “But I was alone, and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill, I had seen the tears and heard the speeches. I got to the end, and I didn’t want more. I had exhausted every possible piece of Arya. And this season was quite big for me. I had a lot more to do. Mainly because there’s just less characters now, so everyone’s got more to do.”

Besides Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage recently also gave his opinion on Tyrion Lannister’s final scenes on the show. According to Dinklage, Tyrion was given a proper conclusion while adding that even if his character ended up dead, “death can be a great way out.”

The final season of Game of Thrones is scheduled to premiere in the first half of 2019, and if cast continues to sharing, there is no doubt that we will find out lot more details about it before the first episode airs.
