Matthew Perry left an important mark on the world of entertainment before tragically passing away at the age of 54 this past weekend. The Emmy-nominated actor graced both our TV and silver screens over the course of the past four decades, and here are five roles that cemented his legacy.

Friends

It’s impossible to talk about Matthew Perry without mentioning his most iconic character – Chandler Bing. His hilarious one-liners and sarcastic charm transformed Friends into an instant classic that people still enjoy rewatching over two decades later.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

Friends may be Perry’s most popular show, but it’s not the most critically acclaimed one. That honor belongs to this Aaron Sorkin-created dramedy, which exposes the inner workings of an SNL-inspired live sketch comedy show.

The Whole Nine Yards

Perry landed one of his most memorable film roles opposite Bruce Willis in The Whole Nine Yards and its sequel The Whole Ten Yards. He added a touch of comedy to this crime film in the role of quirky dentist Nicholas “Oz” Oseransky.

The Good Wife

Perry shined in guest roles in many acclaimed TV shows, from The West Wing to Scrubs. Most notably, he played the attorney Mike Kresteva in the legal drama The Good Wife and later reprised this role in its spinoff The Good Fight.

The Ron Clark Story

Perry owes one of his Emmy nods to the role in this TV film, which tells the tale of real-life teacher Ron Clark, who left his small hometown to bring his innovative teaching methods to a New York City public school.

It’s official: the cast of Friends is reuniting for a special.

Multiple outlets confirm that Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer have signed on to take part in a taped unscripted reunion special for HBO Max.

The most famous group of friends will return the original Friends soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank.

“Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire ‘Friends’ library,” said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer at HBO Max in a statement. “I became aware of Friend’ when it was in the very early stages of development and then had the opportunity to work on the series many years later and have delighted in seeing it catch on with viewers generation after generation. It taps into an era when friends — and audiences — gathered together in real-time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans.”

Friends ran for 10 seasons from 1994-2004 on NBC.

Freddie Prinze Jr. reveals that Sandy was supposed to be played by the Oscar winning actor.

The 200th episode of the iconic sitcom titled “The One With the Male Nanny” starred Prinze as the titular character. But now we learn that the sensitive “manny” who Ross (David Schwimmer) doesn’t approve of was supposed to be portrayed by none other than Tom Hanks.

“I wasn’t even supposed to be [Sandy], that was originally offered to Tom Hanks but he wasn’t gonna make it back from his film on time,” Prinze told Entertainment Weekly. “And so my agent called me and said, ‘Do you want to be on Friends? And I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll do an episode of Friends. That’ll be great.’ He said, ‘Yeah, it shoots tomorrow.’ and I was like, ‘What?’ He said, ‘Yes, tomorrow so I’ll send you the script.’”

It all worked out perfectly and despite not approving of his character on screen, Schwimmer and Prize got on very well off screen.

“David Schwimmer walked into my dressing room and he was so cool and so passionate and he had so much energy. He came into the room and was like, ‘You’re going to love this, man. It’s like a little two-act play and the crowd is so engaged, and so into it. You’ll have a ton of fun, don’t worry about a thing.’”

Warner Bros. and reps for Hanks had not comment.

The first season of Friends came out in 1995, and no one could have anticipated what a hit it would be. It was the show that bought Jenifer Aniston into the spotlight, and it would be the show that everyone would be talking about for years to come.

Full of ’90s references and in-jokes tailored especially for fans, it’s no wonder that it became such a cultural phenomenon back in its day. But why are fans still so obsessed with it today?

Since the show landed on Netflix, a new generation of viewers has been flooding onto the platform to watch the gang navigate through love, life, and friendship.

Netflix reportedly spent $80 million to keep the show on their platform, and there’s good reason for their decision. People just can’t seem to get enough.

There’s no disputing that the writing is excellent, and as far as sit-coms go, Friends goes unrivaled. The writers did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life and each episode tells a story.

And yet one can’t help but wonder how a generation of “woke” individuals are OK with Joey’s insensitive womanizing behavior, the lack of inclusivity and frequent gender stereotyping and homophobia.

While some fans will argue that the show was generally quite progressive and is still funny today, there seems to be something greater at play. There are plenty of recent and less problematic shows where the characters get brilliant one-liners. And yet people still return to Friends. So what is it that makes this series in particular so special?

We’ve debated long and hard over this, but we finally think we understand. It’s all to do with the fact we can relate to the characters no matter what situation they are in.

At one point or another, every character ends up at rock bottom. Be it a relationship ending, the death of a loved one, losing their job or a third divorce, life treats the characters on the show as unfairly as it treats the rest of it.

Somehow though, against all odds, the characters always make it through. Friends thus teaches us that no matter how bad things get (and it may get bad), there’s always hope. And at the end of the day, it’s the friends you choose to surround yourself with who will help you get through.

So yes, the writing is amazing, the cast is fantastic and the show has us cracking up over and over again, but these are not the reasons why Friends has remained a cultural favorite.

Ultimately, Friends teaches us that although there will be ups and downs, there’s always the chance to look back over life with a sense of pride and gratitude for those around you.

The characters are so intricately crafted that we end up feeling as if we know them, so that by the end of season 10, we feel part of the gang ourselves. And with the gang at hand, we know that eventually, everything will be OK.

According to Metro, shows like Friends and The Big Bang Theory can help ease anxiety.

After a stressful day, sometimes nothing beats slumping down on the sofa with some snacks to binge watch shows that you have already seen a hundred times before. If you feel guilty about constantly re-watching your old shows, then don’t. It really can do your mental health some good.

Speaking with a clinical psychologist, Metro revealed: “Having worked for over a period of 20 years with those experiencing anxiety, I can conclude that among other factors, it is the repetitive and relational nature of programs such as Friends and Big Bang Theory that will be doing the trick.

“[Watching Friends] is about an experience of repair, of watching the characters in the show repeatedly having worries, which then get repaired and soothed, usually in the context of other relationships in their lives.”

Having watched Ross recover from three divorces, Monica battle through her OCD, Rachel deal with losing everything, Pheobe retain a positive despite her hard life, Joe struggle financially and Chandler, well, struggle from being Chandler.. we agree that Friends is a show about perseverance and repair. There’s also nothing more therapeutic than having a good laugh.

Friends is available to re-watch on Netflix now.

Friends creator Jane Foda has absolutely, irrefutably confirmed that a Friends reunion is not going to happen.

Rumors about a Friends reunion circulate more often than women come and go out of Joey’s flat. In any interview with Jennifer Aniston when of her movies comes out, she gets asked whether she would be up for reuniting with her Friends co-stars. It’s no different for Matt LeBlanc or any of the other sitcom stars.

Generally, it has been concluded that the girls are totally up for a reunion but that the boys are not so keen. Now, the creator of the show has confirmed that a reunion is 100% off the cards and has given two pretty good reasons why.

“There are several reasons,” Foda tells Rolling Stone. “One, the show is about a time in your life when your friends are your family. It’s not that time anymore. All we’d be doing is putting those six actors back together, but the heart of the show would be gone.

“Two, I don’t know what good it does us. The show is doing just fine, people love it. [A reunion] could only disappoint.”

She then joked that a reunion episode would be called: “The One Where Everyone’s Disappointed.”

In case you haven’t already read it, The Guardian posted a fantastic “inside story” of Friends yesterday (February 6). 25 years on from the show’s debut, fans are still referencing inside jokes from the show and a whole new generation of watchers have fallen in love with the gang too.

To celebrate the show’s success, The Guardian shared some quotes from the cast and crew speaking of their involvement with the show.

Mitchell Whitfield (Barry Farber): “I was brought in to audition for Ross and Chandler. I went back multiple times, and then they realised Ross was the role for me. I got down to the very end, and was testing for the show. At the last minute, they said: “We’re bringing in one more guy to read.” That guy turned out to be David Schwimmer.”

Christina Pickles (Judy Geller): At the beginning of Friends, Matt LeBlanc was anxious. Every time he did something, he would look for approval to the director, the producers or the writers if they were around. There would be a look of: “Am I doing this right?” He ended up being amazing. He was so perfect as Joey. He slowly built that character into a wonderful, real person.”

Cosimo Fusco (Paolo): “When I taped my first episode, no one had seen it on TV yet. While we were filming, they announced the show had been commissioned for 12 episodes. Jennifer Aniston basically cried in my lap because nothing like that had ever happened to her before.”

Vincent Ventresca (Fun Bobby): “I was so young and full of myself, and I’d just done a pilot for Fox’s new medical show. I thought I was the coolest person in the world. I was at home, and my agent said: “Hey, do you want to go and audition for this new show?” It was a really small part, so, of course, I’m whining like a little actor. But something inside me told me, just do it. So I went in and cried in front of Marta Kauffman, and she was like: “Great!”

Friends is back on Netflix so if you can’t remember who some of these characters are, you can refresh yourself now.
