Avatar: The Way of Water has been setting records left and right ever since its premiere and it’s showing no signs of stopping. James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel neared the $1.4 billion mark at the global box office during its third weekend in theatres.

The Way of Water rang in the New Year with $1.379 billion earned worldwide, and it’s especially popular overseas. Its international box office revenue now stands at $957 million and it’s set to cross $1 billion in offshore earnings alone later this week.

The Way of Water is currently the 14th highest-earning film of all time, after passing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Black Panther. It’s safe to expect its earnings will rise even higher, and it has the potential to become one of a handful of films that crossed the coveted $2 billion mark at the box office.

Avatar: The Way of Water premiered on December 16, after a 13-year-long wait, and we’ve seen it set several box office milestones following its release. After just 14 days in theatres, it became the sixth-fastest film to cross the billion-dollar mark and the fastest to do so in 2022. It’s currently the second highest-grossing film of 2022, but it’s close to passing Top Gun: Maverick, which earned $1.488 billion worldwide.

CGI just keeps getting better and better, and when it comes to visual cinema, the sky is the limit. Here are some of the visually spectacular movies of the decades, which legitimately blew our minds.

Interstellar (2014)

The cinematography from Hoyte van Hoytema was stellar (no pun intended). It was easily the best movie to come out in 2014.

Avatar (2009)

Avatar only just makes the list given that it will be approaching its ten year anniversary this year. When a film takes as long as it did to make, you better expect it to be stunning. And it didn’t disappoint.

Inception (2010)

Inception may be full of plot holes and confusion, but the cinematography cannot be faulted. The dream sequences and architectural montages are phenomenal.

Gravity (2013)

I am reluctant to include Gravity because the storyline was so disappointing. The cinematography, however, was unparalleled.

Black Panther (2018)

We hesitantly proclaim Black Panther to be the best movie of 2018. It may not have taken the Oscar this year, but the African-noir cinematography was incredible.

Hereditary (2018)

When talking about cinematography, an arty horror movie is an essential part of the list. 2018’s Hereditary is our top pick.

The Favourite (2018)

There is a reason that The Favourite received a ton of Oscar nominations. It’s pretty much flawless.

Roma (2018)

A beautifully rendered black-and-white tale, which truly is Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón’s masterpiece.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

The animated superhero feature was a surprising treat in 2018. It was mindblowing at the cinema and even better in 3D.

Moonlight (2016)

Every shot in Moonlight is visually stroking. It pulls you right in so it actually feels like you are standing beside the protagonist as you watch the events of the film unfold. A true masterpiece.

Jemaine Clement’s Flight of the Conchords is going a bit further than imagined… all the way to Pandora.

The New Zealander has been confirmed to star in the upcoming Avatar sequels which are being helmed by the director of the original, James Cameron.

Whilst only two sequels were initially planned, this has been increased to four films that will all be shot simultaneously after the Oscar-winning filmmaker realized he had too much material.

The addition of Clement will come in the form of a marine biologist named Dr. Ian Garvin.

“I’ve loved Jemaine’s work for years,” Cameron said of the What We Do in the Shadows actor. “I’m really pumped that he’s joining our cast as Ian Garvin, one of my favorite characters.”

The follow-up films have also added Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and Oona Chaplin who will star alongside returning cast members, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.

Avatars’ sequels are scheduled for release in 2021, 2023, 2025, and 2027.
