]]>Past Lives came into the night as one of the most-nominated films and walked away with the ceremony’s most coveted accolade. It defeated the likes of Passages, Reality, Showing Up, and A Thousand and One to be named best feature at this year’s Gotham Awards.
As for Anatomy of a Fall, Justine Triet’s latest film emerged victorious in two categories. It defeated the likes of All of Us Strangers and Poor Things to walk away with the trophy for the best international feature, in addition to winning the award for best screenplay.
The TV field at this year’s Gotham Award included some worthy contenders, but none of them could stand their ground to Netflix’s Beef. This series won two awards: breakthrough series under 40 minutes and outstanding performance in a new series (Ali Wong)—while A Small Light was named the best breakthrough series over 40 minutes.
The Gotham Awards kicked off the award season on November 27, at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

]]>The post 2023 Gotham Awards Nominations Announced, “All Of Us Strangers” is Leading the Way appeared first on Entertainment For Us.
]]>All Of Us Strangers is in the running for best international feature, and it will have to beat Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, and Tótem to take this trophy home. Past Lives has been nominated in the best feature field with Passages, Reality, Showing Up, and A Thousand and One, while Beef is the main contender in the TV categories.
2023 is shaping up to be the year of change for Gotham Awards, as the ceremony removed its $35 budget cap for the first time to create “a more inclusive submission pool” of nominees.
“We’re excited to include more voices from around the globe by expanding eligibility for the many brilliant international films and filmmakers who deserve to be in consideration this year. Additionally, with shifting budgets, we’ve decided to eliminate arbitrary budget caps for submission eligibility,” said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute in a statement.
Despite this major change, Gotham Awards are still the place where small indie movies will shine the brightest. We didn’t see many big-budget films make the cut, with the exception of Ryan Gosling’s nod for Barbie and Penélope Cruz’s nomination for Ferrari in the best supporting performance field.

]]>During a recent appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Best of Today podcast, explained why The Great Escaper felt like the fitting final act of his career. He said it’s unlikely he’ll be offered any leading roles at the age of 90, so it felt good to go out on a high, playing the lead in an acclaimed movie that received incredible reviews.
Caine’s journey in the world of acting began during the 1950s, and he established himself as one of the biggest stars of his generation, going down in history as one of the rare actors to score Academy Award nods for acting in five different decades. He also won Oscars, both for the best supporting actor, for his roles in Hannah and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules.
Caine’s career experienced a notable resurgence during the 2000s after he crossed paths with the director Christopher Nolan. He cemented his legacy by starring in several of his acclaimed films, including The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Interstellar.

]]>Bassett came close to winning an Oscar on two occasions in the past, and she’s finally getting credit where credit is due. She lost the best supporting actress trophy for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to Jamie Lee Curtis just this winter, 30 years after receiving her first nod for playing Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It.
Academy President Janet Yang praised Bassett for continuing to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting across her decades-long career. She’ll be joined by the actor, producer, and writer Mel Brooks, veteran editor Carol Littleton, and Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter, who’s set to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
The Honorary Oscars are supposed “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.” The class of 2023 will receive their awards at the upcoming Governors Awards, taking place on November 18 in Los Angeles.

]]>Davis received her very first Grammy nomination at this year’s ceremony, for the best audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording. She defeated the likes of Jamie Foxx and Lin-Manuel Miranda to win this prestigious accolade with her memoir Finding Me.
“I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola. To honor her life, her joy, her trauma, everything. And, it has just been such a journey – I just EGOT!” Davis said during her acceptance speech.
It took 22 years for Davis to achieve her EGOT status, and it all started with her Tony win for best featured actress in a play with King Hedley II in 2001. She won her second Tony for best leading actress in a play with Fences in 2010 and kept collecting awards once she broke into Hollywood.
She became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for best actress in a drama with her role in How to Get Away with Murder in 2015. She’s also the most-nominated Black actress in the Academy Awards history with four nods, and she received her Oscar for best supporting actress for a film adaptation of her Tony-winning play Fences.

]]>Following a devastating car collision that left her in a coma, Heche was declared legally dead on August 12. She was left on life support until a suitable organ recipient was found because she expressed a wish to be an organ donor long before her tragic accident.
Heche’s family confirmed her passing in an official statement, saying that we have lost “a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend”, but that her legacy lives on through “her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy.”
Heche got her big break with a role in the soap opera Another World, which earned her a Daytime Emmy Award and two Soap Opera Digest Awards. She went on to star in many other TV shows over the years, including Men in Trees, Hung, Aftermath, and Gracie’s Choice, for which she received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
Heche was also an accomplished film actress, starring in such hits as Donnie Brasco, Volcano, Six Days, Seven Nights, and Return to Paradise. She turned to independent film in later years and appeared in acclaimed projects Birth, Spread, Cedar Rapids, and Rampart.

]]>The post 2022 Emmy Awards: “Succession” Tops Nominations, Followed by “Ted Lasso” & “The White Lotus” appeared first on Entertainment For Us.
]]>Succession scored 12 nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards and an additional 13 for Creative Arts Emmy Awards. It will try to repeat its success in 2020 and with the award for outstanding drama, but it will have to beat Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Ozark, Severance, Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Yellowjackets to make it happen.
As for Ted Lasso, the winner of the outstanding comedy series at the last year’s ceremony will try to repeat its success. Hacks and Only Murders in the Building will be its strongest competitors since they’re coming into the ceremony with a total of 17 nominations each.
The race for the winner of outstanding limited series is less crowded, and it will most likely come down to two shows. The White Lotus is leading the way with a total of 11 nods for Primetime Emmys, but Hulu’s mini-series Dopesick is right behind with nine.
The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on September 12 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and the Television Academy is yet to find a host.

]]>Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza were also in the running for the biggest award of the night, but they couldn’t stand their ground to Jane Campion’s western drama. She also collected the award for the best director, becoming only the third woman in history to do so.
Dune was one of the front-runners at this year’s BAFTAs after topping the list of nominees with 11 nods. It managed to win five of the awards it was nominated for in the craft categories, including best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.
When it comes to the acting categories, Will Smith cemented his status as the front-runner for best actor after winning another award for King Richard. The best actress category didn’t give us a lot of insight into the future Oscar winner, because it went to the underdog Joanna Scanlan for After Love.
The 75th British Academy Film Awards took place on March 13th at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with Rebel Wilson hosting the ceremony.

Will Smith was named best actor for his performance in King Richard, Jessica Chastain picked up the trophy for best actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, while Ariana DeBose was rewarded for her supporting turn in West Side Story.
The TV categories were much easier to call, with front-runners Succession and Ted Lasso taking awards for the best acting ensemble in their respective categories. Netflix smash hit Squid Game also had a big night, winning three awards—best actor and actress in a drama (Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-Yeon), and best stunt ensemble.
The 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards were presented at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on February 27th.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who made her feature directorial debut with this drama, won awards for the best director and best screenwriter for her work on this psychological drama.
When it comes to the acting field, Simon Rex (Red Rocket) and Taylour Paige (Zola) both had a big night and managed to win awards for the best male and female lead. Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ruth Negga (Passing) were honored for their supporting performances.
This marked the second Independent Spirit Awards ceremony that honored television projects, in addition to movies. Reservation Dogs dominated the TV field and walked away with two major awards—the best new scripted series and the best ensemble cast.
The 2022 Independent Spirit Awards took place on March 6th, with Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman hosting the ceremony.

]]>CODA pulled the night’s biggest upset in the ceremony’s main category—the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. It managed to beat Belfast, Don’t Look Up, The House of Gucci, and King Richard to walk away with this prestigious award.
Its star Troy Kotsur was crowned as the best supporting actor, and he was in pretty good company.
