Many of this year’s most-anticipated films premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and the Golden Lion went to a worthy winner. Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door led by Oscar winners Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore was honored with the coveted Golden Lion.

Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, Pablo Larraín’s Maria, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer were some of the films competing for the Golden Lion in Venice. This award eventually went to Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, the tale of two women who were close friends in their youth, who meet again after years of being out of touch.

It was also a festival to remember for Nicole Kidman, who won the Volpi Cup for best actress for her performance in Babygirl, while Vincent Lindon won the Volpi Cup for best actor for The Quiet Son.

Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist was honored with the Silver Lion, while Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio walked away with the Grand Jury Prize. Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement went to the Australian filmmaker Peter Weir (Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show) and the Alien star Sigourney Weaver.

This year’s Venice Film Festival was one for the books, and it brought countless amazing movies our way. Yorgos Lanthimos gave us one of the festival’s most talked-about new films with Poor Things, and this acclaimed black comedy eventually won the Golden Lion trophy.

Poor Things offers a feminist take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and it centers on a young Victorian woman Bella (Emma Stone) trying to forge her own path after being brought back to life by a mysterious scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Jerrod Carmichael, and Margaret Qualley.

Poor Things was met with rave reviews after its world premiere in Venice, and it defeated the likes of Michael Mann’s Ferrari, David Fincher’s The Killer, and Sofia Copolla’s Priscilla to win the festival’s most prestigious award—the Golden Lion. Lanthimos dedicated the victory to Stone and said this film is all her, both front and behind the camera.

When it comes to acting accolades, Memory’s Peter Sarsgaard and Priscilla’s star Cailee Spaeny collected the Volpi Cup for their respective performances. The list of major winners also included Evil Does Not Exist (Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize), Green Border (Special Jury Prize), and Io Capitano (Silver Lion Best Director for Matteo Garrone).

Italy is set to pay tribute one of Spain’s most famous directors.

Having been in the industry for 45 years, it seems almost unbelievable that Pedro Almodóvar has not yet been honored by the Venice Film Festival.

But this is a big year for the Todo Sobre Mi Madre director. Not only is he turning 70, but his most recent film, Pain and Glory, was a standout at the Cannes Film Festival, with its star Antonio Banderas being named best actor.

The upcoming Venice Film Festival has announced that it will be awarding Almodóvar its Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement.

Festival director Alberto Barbera described Almodóvar as “the greatest and most influential Spanish director since Buñuel, and moreover as a filmmaker who has offered us the most multifaceted, controversial, and provocative portraits of post-Franco Spain.”

“I am very excited and honored by the gift of this Golden Lion,” Almodóvar said. “This Lion is going to become my pet, along with the two cats I live with. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for giving me this award.”

The 76th Venice Film Festival is scheduled to take place between August 28th and September 7th.
