The hit teen drama Mean Girls is being turned into a movie. Multiple outlets confirm that Tina Fey’s Mean Girls Broadway musical is heading to the big screen. Fey wrote and starred in the original 2004 film, also penned the script for the forthcoming musical Mean Girls film. 

“I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Fey said in a statement. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences.”

“I’ve spent sixteen years with these characters now,” she added. “They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”

Co-producer Lorne Michaels added, “It has been a joy to work on Mean Girls and to watch it go from film, to musical, and now to musical film. I am very proud that Tina’s story and characters continue to resonate with new generations.” 

Reportedly, no director is set at this time.

 Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return to host the 2021 Golden Globe Awards. Next year’s emceeing gig will be the ladies’ fourth time hosting the awards ceremony. 

NBC Entertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy made the announcement during  NBC’s presentation at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday, saying, “NBC has long been the home to two of the funniest people on the planet — Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — and we didn’t want to wait any longer to share the great news that they’ll be hosting the Globes once again.”

The 2021 Golden Globes has yet to set a date.

Soul, the film that “will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions” will star Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey as the leads.

They will be joined by Daveed Diggs, Phylicia Rashad, and Questlove, who are also set to lend their voices to the original animated film. 

Soul is Pete Docter’s fourth directed feature for Pixar, following Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out. 

“I’m directing a film that asks the ultimate question that we’ve all thought about at one time or another: Why am I here? Where did I come from? And what am I here for?” Docter revealed. “But who would make a cartoon about that? Metaphysics? We’re calling it Soul.”

After Docter made the announcement at D23 on Saturday, Fey told expo-goers: “I’m so excited to be onstage with all these people and to be a part of this movie. Wait ’til you hear Jamie Foxx in this movie, guys. It’s really good. I think you’re going to like it. I think it’s real emotional. But also like, there’s nothing better than a Pixar movie, right?”

Soul arrives in theaters on June 19th, 2020.
