Del Toro was a strong favorite to win after winning a series of major awards this year including the title of “Best Director” at the Baftas and the Golden Globes.
Given that the fantasy genre is notorious for performing poorly at the Oscars, it is perhaps no surprise that The Shape of Water was Del Toro’s first nomination as a director. In the spirit of great cinema, however, the academy clearly saw beyond genre and recognized the incredible cinematography and outstanding direction of the movie.
In his politically charged acceptance speech, Del Toro paid homage to his roots and commented on the progress of the diversification of the film industry:
“I am an immigrant … The best thing our industry does is to help erase the lines in the sand when the world tries to make them deeper.”
The award makes Del Toro the third Mexican film-maker to win the best director in the last five years. His victory thus marks the industry’s progress as well as being well deserved in honor of the incredible piece of cinema that is The Shape of Water.

]]>Nonetheless, the set design was phenomenal and there were several warm and funny moments. It was a little more low-key than previous years and Kimmel set the tone from the start, opening with a funny speech which also paid recognition to the last six months of #MeToo ruckus in the industry.
Funny highlights included Jenifer Lawrence clambering over a row of seats with a wine glass and Helen Mirren riding on stage with a jet ski. Heartwarming moments included Jordan Peele’s inspiring acceptance speech and Frances McDormand’s powerful speech about inclusion.
The shape of Water won four took the lead winning four awards. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri also performed well and Get Out won best original screenplay. The best-animated feature went to Coco, which also won an award for Best original song.
All in all, the Oscars this year was optimistic and entertaining, although we must admit that it is always a little disappointing when the Oscars run so smoothly.

]]>We already know that Del Toro has a love of monsters, but this time the monster is not there for the appeal of hardcore horror fans, but instead presents something of a love interest for the unlikely leading lady, Elisa (Sally Hawkins).
Del Toro wrote the script with Hawkins in mind to play the lead and her performance does not disappoint. She captures the character exquisitely well and gives what could quite possibly be the most heartfelt speech of the year so far, only she does it without saying a single word. The fact that Elisa is mute does not inhibit Hawkins but instead inspired her to give an incredible performance which critics are likening to that of a timeless silent-movie star.
Naturally, the cinematography is hauntingly beautiful and the movie leaves its audience with a sincere, human message of love and acceptance. Regardless of how you feel about the fantasy genre, there is something in this movie for everyone. Will it win an Oscar? It is hard to say because, despite its merits, the niche and bizarre nature of the movie might present a challenge. Either way, it is absolutely worth a watch.
