The Lighthouse might be serious and gloomy, but Cannes audiences like that sort of thing.

Robert Eggers’ latest picture is a black and white tension fest that stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Defoe as two men who take care of a lighthouse and descend into madness.

Pattinson has already spoken about the grueling weather conditions in which the cast and crew had to shoot, while Defoe confessed that his and Pattinson’s different personalities resulted in tension on set.

All aside, critics have raved about the film, and now Eggers has an award to show for it.

The Witch filmmaker received the Fipresci Critics’ Award for best first or second feature in Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival where The Lighthouse had its world premiere.

The Fipresci jury described the feature as “a brutal work of art, all shot in beautiful black-and-white cinematography and fuelled by a soundscape that echoes like a foghorn.”
