According to Deadline, Momoa and Hardy’s departure is caused by financial issues and creative differences the duo had with producer Samuel Hadida, whose company Davis Films owns the rights for the movie and was financing the project. The filming for The Crow remake was to take place in Budapest in the next five weeks with October 11th, 2019 being set as an official release date.

Following his exit from the project, Jason Momoa shared a statement on his Instagram profile, explaining his decision.

“I’ve waited 8 years to play this dream role,” wrote Momoa. “I love you @corinhardy and @sonypictures unfortunately I may have to wait for 8 more. Not our team. But I swear I will. James O’Barr sorry to let you down I won’t on the next. This film needs to be set free. And to the fans. Sorry. I can’t play anything but what this film deserves and it needs love. I’m ready when it’s right. Love u Corin aloha j”

The Crow graphic novel, created by James O’Barr, was previously adapted into a 1994 movie of the same name, which starred Brandon Lee. The talks about the remake started in 2008, with multiple actors being rumored to be frontrunners for the lead role over the years including Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, Channing Tatum and Ryan Gosling. The project moved forward finally in March 2016, with Corin Hardy being attached as a director with Jason Momoa being cast as the lead later that year.
