Only the most culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films are granted a spot on the National Film Registry, and this year’s annual list has been unveiled. The Library of Congress announced 25 movies to make the cut, including The Dark Knight, Grease, Shrek, The Blues Brothers, and The Hurt Locker.

What makes this year’s annual list unique in comparison to the ones that came before it is an emphasis on diverse stories and filmmakers. Some of the films that made the cut are female-directed Losing Ground and The Hurt Locker, and POC-centered stories The Joy Luck Club, Lilies of the Field, and Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden acknowledged that this year’s list shines a spotlight on diversity and explained why it’s so significant. “With the inclusion of diverse filmmakers, we are not trying to set records but rather to set the record straight by spotlighting the astonishing contributions women and people of color have made to American cinema, despite facing often-overwhelming hurdles,” she said in a statement.

The National Film Registry was introduced in 1988, and a total of 800 films have been included so far, ranging from Hollywood classics to short and experimental films.

From The Pick of Destiny to The Blues Brothers, there is a whole collection of movies out there which feature a make-believe or real band as central to the movie’s plot and theme. Here are ten of the best.

Sid & Nancy

Sid and Nancy tells the infamous love story of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. It’s funny, shocking, tragic and it features a whole lot of the Sex Pistols.

The Runaways

The Runaways, much like The Beatles, did what no one else had done before. Kirstin Stewart stars as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Curry in the rock ‘n’ roll tale of The Runaways.

School of Rock

It’s ridiculous and silly and we love it. The kids in the School of Rock put together one hell of a show.

Sing Street

A group of working class Irish lads put together a band to impress a girl. It ends up defining who they are, and the songs are genuine get-up-and-dance fun.

The Commitments

A movie with some serious soul.

Almost Famous

A budding young journalist goes on tour with rock ‘n’ roll stars Stillwater. It’s a movie that makes you want to get on the road and join in the party.

The Blues Brothers

A natural choice and an absolute classic.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

An eccentric movie featuring the original works of the made-up band “Sex Bob-Omb.” The music was actually written by Beck.

This is Spinal Tapp

If you like band movies, you’ve probably already seen this and almost definitely know at least half the movie’s quotes off by heart.

Frank

A lesser-known movie featuring a band of misfits who take inspiration from the most unexpected places. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the theremin.
