NBC is stepping up its 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards marketing game with warnings that when Gervais is hosting, audiences should expect the unexpected. 

The Peacock has unveiled new promos of the awards show on Thursday morning. 

“Happy holidays, America. I’m Ricky Gervais, and I’m hosting the Golden Globe Awards,” he says in the first of two new promos for the hosting gig. “So, there’s your early gift. Is it just what you wanted? No. It’s not, is it?” Gervais is then seen spraying the set — including the cameras — with champagne, while a voiceover warns, “as usual, we have no idea what he’s going to do.”

When it was first announced that Gervais would return as host Paul Telegdy, chairman of NBC Entertainment said, “It is sure to make for an unexpected evening. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.” 

Gervais previously hosted the Golden Globes in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2016. The Globes will air live on NBC, January 5, at 8 p.m. from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

The British comedian and his very sharp tongue is set to host the 77th Golden Globe Awards marking his fifth time fronting the ceremony. The record breaking hosting duties, however, will be his last time.

“Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening,” Gervais said in a statement.

“There is always a palpable electricity in the room when Ricky takes the Globes stage. His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated,” added Paul Telegdy, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “It is sure to make for an unexpected evening. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.”

NBC will broadcast the awards show live on January 5, 2020.

The 2020 show has been set for January 5, which means that the 77th Golden Globe Awards will be yet again the first big awards show of the season.

The annual award show will be produced by Dick Clark Productions in partnership with the HFPA. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 2020 show will be the second in an eight-year deal inked between NBC and HFPA. The Globes have aired on NBC since 1993 and are viewed in more than 220 countries worldwide. 

It seems this year’s Globes honorees won’t have an impact on Academy voters, as this year’s show falls just two days before Oscar nomination balloting closes on January 7. Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on January 13; the ceremony is set for February 9.

The 2019 Golden Globes was co-hosted by Sandra Oh and Adam Samberg. The broadcast logged just over 18 million viewers.
