Santa Clarita Diet has been canceled after three seasons.

The streaming giant confirmed that its ‘zom-com’ will not continue to a fourth season one month after the show’s third season aired.

The dark comedy followed realtor spouses Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and Joel (Timothy Olyphant) who lead discontented lives in the LA suburb of Santa Clarita, when Sheila goes through a dramatic change, which turns her into a zombie.

“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,” Netflix said in a statement. “To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

“Like our audience, we were all-in on Sheila and Joel. Their relationship, in the face of incredible adversity, was inspiring to write and to watch.  Mostly, they were funny, which in a comedy is important.  Working with Drew and Tim, along with the immensely talented Liv and Skyler, was a joy and a once in a lifetime experience,” showrunner Victor Fresco and exec producer Tracy Katsky said in a joint statement Friday.

“Netflix took a chance on this odd show and for that we will always be grateful.  They were supportive, ever positive, and appreciative of our work.  Until about noon today.  Still, they were just one phone call away from being a perfect studio. Not bad. Everything ends. This was a thing. And so it ended. We’ll miss it but are proud of the work we did and will always appreciate the love and enthusiasm we felt from our audience. It if was up to them, Sheila and Joel would continue for another 10,000 years.”

Season 3 of Santa Clarita Diet proved what we knew already.. the Hammonds are our favorite real-a-tor family in America and Sheila should be worshiped like the undead Goddess she is.

In terms of plot, more happened in season 3 than has happened on the show before. There were more fight scenes, bloody death scenes and Abby even gets in on the action and stabs a member of the undead to death. What is so shocking about the violence is just how unphased the Hammond family have become. At first, Sheila and Joel desperately try to shelter Abby from their bizarre world but by the end, they are one big, happy zombie slaying family.

The scenes where Sheila and Joel converse during their awful missions are some of the highlights. The couple seamlessly switch between their suburban life and their mental new life. For example, when contemplating how to execute the disposal of a decomposing body, the idea of framing an innocent lion becomes a segway to discussing whether or not they should renew their zoo passes. The way the couple navigate family life and undead life is a major source of the show’s unique humor.

Season 3 also introduced us to an eclectic host of new characters. Psychiatric patient Ron returns and forces the decrepit head that is Garry to bite him. As a member of the undead, Ron has a bad habit of turning his friends and the Hammonds are forced into keeping him prisoner so they can teach him why turning people into zombies is bad. Meanwhile, Sheila goes behind Joel’s back and turns the old lady she delivers meals to into a member of the undead so she can see her granddaughter for the first time. It’s all very sweet until the newly undead friends end up killing a woman together in her appartment. Tommy is also a fun addition to the cast who starts out wanting to kill Sheila and ends up a member of her cult. It’s all very, very insane.

Anyhow, the season had us laughing out loud and despite ourselves, we’ve fallen deeply for the real-a-tor Hammond family. Eric and Abby are our new favorite ‘will they/won’t they’ couple and we’re hopeful for a season 4 which sees the zombie virus spreading tenfold and the cult of Sheila becoming even more of a force to be reckoned with.

4/5

Santa Clarita Diet

True Blood

True Blood is a raunchy and daring dark fantasy horror show about some very sexy vampires.

Stranger Things was the show everyone was raving about when it first came to Netflix in 2016. It’s incredibly well written and has some very creepy moments.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

OK, it technically started in the 90’s, but Buffy ran into the 2000’s and was so forward thinking and relevant that it deserves to be on the list. Plus, it’s got everything from demons to vampires, ghosts and werewolves. Oh, and Buffy’s best friend is a witch.

American Horror Story

American Horror Story is the pinnacle of TV horror. It spans over eight seasons, each telling a different story, and it contains monsters and murders more frightening then most of the movies we’ve seen.

The bombastic and deliciously entertaining Santa Clarita Diet has been renewed by Netflix for another season.

Season 3 will be made up of another 10 short episodes and will be released in 2019. Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson, and Skyler Gisond will return as the main cast members.

For those of you who didn’t catch last season, the series revolves around a suburban family whose life gets turned upside down when wife and mother Sheila (Drew Barrymore) vomits an excessive amount and then wakes up a zombie. From then on, the series portrays how the family handle the big change and struggle to keep up appearances despite the fact Sheila and her husband now have to hunt and murder people so that she can eat.

Barrymore said to Variety about the series:

“I think the show is about a married a couple and a marriage that’s constantly getting challenged. And this husband and wife react to that. But I also love the balance. One moment you’re hearing the craziest thing you’ve ever said or heard and the next [it’s] where are our garden hoses and why are they getting stolen? Typical mundane suburban things. We’re also raising a teenage daughter, so there’s a domestic element. It’s all very human and suburban and relatable, and the stakes are crazy. But I think in this world, you need to go to this crazy place for it to be shocking.”

More updates as they arrive.

It’s been a year since we watched season one of the wacky Netflix Original Santa Clarita Diet with a shocked but wildly amused grimace on our faces. The series gave us an entirely new scenario of the “perfect suburban life” and stars Drew Barrymore as a wild, ultra modern take on the undead. The episodes are 20 minutes long, so we easily watched it over a weekend, then found ourselves indulgently satisfied but oddly unfussed about the second season.

Well, the second season came out this month and we bloody loved it – bloody being the operative word here. It’s gruesome, gory, gutsy, gross and disgustingly hilarious. We were barely fifteen minutes into the season when Sheila (Drew Barrymore) violently disemboweled a man with her teeth in her sparkling clean soon-to-be-drenched-in-blood-and-guts kitchen.

The series continues to illuminate the pressures and desires of being a “normal”, perfect family in American Suburbia, comically in spite of the Sheila’s transformation. All the performances are brilliant, especially by Liv Hewson, who is naturally engaging and is fantastic in her portrayal of Abby, Barrymore’s on-screen daughter. Her character is the most “normal” in the sense that she is the one we can empathize with and relate to sincerely among the chaos. When the other characters try to be “normal” it becomes so utterly absurd that they become almost impossible to take seriously.

The way the series so far ends has us excited for the next season, and there was something so weirdly entertaining about the characters and the bombastic gore that many people have found themselves going back to season 1 for a re-watch – myself being one of them.
