Bowers has just the right background to serve as director of Paramount Player’s forthcoming live-action adaptation of Rugrats. 

Bowers has directed the second, third and fourth live-action installments of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. He also helmed other animated movies including Astro Boy and Flushed Away. 

The original television series was created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain for Nickelodeon. It centered on a group of toddlers including Tommy, Chuckie, twins Phil and Lil, and Angelica, and their comical adventures. The series aired 176 episodes between 1991 and 2000 airing. The show was then into a trio of animated movies released between 1998 and 2003.

David A. Goodman has been tapped to adapt the script. Producers are Brian Robbins, series creator Csupó and Karen Rosenfelt. 

The studio has set a January 29, 2021, release date.
