Back in December 2017, news broke that legendary director Quentin Tarantino is interested in making a Star Trek movie with fellow director J.J. Abrams. Since then we didn’t get many details about the project except that Tarantino and Abrams pitched their idea to Paramount and that the studio began the development process on the movie. Now Tarantino decided to provide an update on the project and delivered some encouraging news to the fans of the franchise.

In a recent interview, Tarantino discussed the Star Trek movie and said that there is a “big possibility” that the movie ends up happening and that the script is already finished.

“It’s a very big possibility,” said Tarantino when asked whether he will take on the Star Trek movie. “I haven’t been dealing with those guys for a while ’cause I’ve been making my movie. But we’ve talked about a story and a script. The script has been written and when I emerge my head like Punxsutawney Phil, post- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, we’ll pick up talking about it again.”

Paramount recently encountered some issues with Star Trek franchise, as Star Trek 4, which would serve as a sequel to 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond, was delayed due to contracting disputes with stars Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth. This turn of events might now encourage the studio to speed up the process on Tarantino’s movie and give fans something to be excited about.

Quentin Tarantino’s vision for his upcoming Star Trek movie doesn’t exactly sit well with Paramount studio, but the fans probably won’t mind. It looks like Tarantino is pushing for his Star Trek project to move on from the PG-13 realm and be R-Rated. The intentions of the legendary director were recently revealed by actor Karl Urban, who plays Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the most recent reboot trilogy.

“Quentin Tarantino went into J.J. [Abrams]’s offices and pitched him an idea for a Star Trek movie.” – Urban said at this year’s Trekonderoga. “I know a little bit about what that is and it’s bananas… You shouldn’t worry that it is going to be full of obscenity and stuff. He wants an R-rating to really make those beats of consequence land. If it’s not PG, if someone gets sucked out into space, which we have all seen before, we might see them get disemboweled first… It allows some breadth… gives him some leeway to do that. To me, that was always one of the things I loved about what DeForest Kelley did. He would actually capture the horror of space. That look in his eyes of sheer terror always struck me when I was a kid.”

The overall state of the Star Trek franchise looks great at the moment, with the most recent series Star Trek: Discovery being warmly received by the audience. There is also another television project in the works which will see Patrick Stewart reprising his legendary role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. On the movie front, the things are not so good.

The sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond is still stuck in development, and there are no indications when will the movie enter production. The answer could easily be never since Chris Hemsworth reportedly won’t reprise his role as George Kirk. Chris Pine, who plays the movie’s lead character, Captain James T. Kirk, is also considering dropping out due to contract disputes.

On the other hand, Quentin Tarantino’s project is currently just an idea. The movie is still to enter the production and currently doesn’t have any members of the cast confirmed. Let’s hope that will change soon.
