]]> Queen Sono made history as Netflix’s first African original series, but it’s one of the latest shows to fall victim to the streaming giant’s cancelation streak. After initially renewing this crime drama back in April, Netflix decided to pull the plug after a single season.

Queen Sono centered on a secret agent who takes part in dangerous missions while dealing with crises in her personal life.

Pearl Thusi, who played the lead in this historic project, expressed gratitude for being a part of it after the show’s cancelation. “It’s so incredible that we as a team got a lifetime opportunity to make history together as there will never be another ‘first’ African Netflix original series. I’m proud of the work we did, but everything happens for a reason. I am excited about what the future holds.”

Showrunner Kagiso Lediga echoed her statement, and described Queen Sono as “another casualty of 2020”, hinting it was canceled due to the production challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Netflix previously canceled several other shows for the same reason, including GLOW, The Society, and I Am Not Okay with This.
