]]>Based on Norman Lear’s sitcom of the same name, One Day at a Time premiered in 2017 focusing on a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles. The series starred an ensemble cast which featured Justina Machado as a single mom and an Army veteran, alongside Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, and Rita Moreno in the lead roles.
“It’s been a great honor to work with the legendary Norman Lear on One Day at a Time. I’ve personally spoken with Norman and co-creators Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce to express my gratitude to them, all the writers, the dedicated crew and the cast, including the brilliant Justina Machado and dazzling Rita Moreno, for creating a series with such humor, heart, and humanity,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos in a statement. “This was a very difficult decision, and we’re thankful to all the fans who’ve supported the series, our partners at Sony and all the critics who embraced it. While it’s disappointing that more viewers didn’t discover One Day at a Time, I believe the series will stand the test of time.”
While the sitcom was a big hit with the critics, and had a high audience approval rating, the reason for the cancellation was reportedly low viewing numbers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, there is a possibility that One Day at a Time gets shopped to other networks or streaming services. This might prove as a difficult task, since the first three seasons of the show will remain at Netflix.
