Netflix orders a new limited series Painkillers from Narcos: Mexico showrunner Eric Newman.

The eight-episode series delves into the origins of the opioid crisis and is based on The New Yorker article The Family That Built an Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe and the book Pain Killer: An Empire of Deceit and the Origin of America’s Opioid Epidemic by Barry Meier.

Peter Berg is attached to direct all episodes of the series from a script penned by Emmy-winning writing duo Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

“I’m grateful to Micah & Noah, and Alex for bringing this story to me. Noah and Micah’s narrative of how it happened, based on the spectacular reporting of Patrick Radden Keefe and Barry Meier, is heartbreaking and terrifying. I’m honored to be working with the great Alex Gibney and I’m thrilled that Peter Berg is coming on to direct it.”

“I am really charged to be a part of such an in-depth exploration of the genesis of the opioid travesty,” Berg said. “Companies that profit off of death and addiction are fair game to me when it comes to illuminating the realities of how they go about their business.”

Netflix are reportedly set to spend upwards of $8 billion on content this year and are expected to have 700 original TV shows by the end of the year. Here are some of our favorites so far.

Sense8

A unique and compelling sci-fi fantasy with lots of saucy bits and an interesting premise.

Bojack Horseman

Definitely my favorite show about a depressed cartoon horse having a mid-life crisis in Hollywood.

Master of None

A Netflix-original comedy loosely based on writer Ansari’s real-life experiences.

Jessica Jones

Krysten Ritter does a phenomenal job portraying Marvel’s badass Jessica Jones.

House of Cards

An absolute fan favourite with a plot containing more twists and turns than a helter skelter.

The Crown

Peter Morgan’s portrayal of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II is suspenseful and fascinating.

Narcos

Another amazing show about drug-related crime. The show is based on the true story of the hunt for Pablo Escobar.

Orange is the New Black

What started off as a hilarious and raunchy show has shaped up to be an important show which highlights some of the core issues surrounding profit-run prisons in the US.

Stranger Things

Who didn’t watch this in a weekend? The 80’s nostalgia, emotional and unnerving show is one of the most popular Netflix originals to date with its second season drawing in over 15 million viewers.
