Gilbert has directed three beloved Bond films, starting with You Only Live Twice in 1967. Since then, he has directed popular classics The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. He was also nominated for an Oscar in 1967 for Alfie which is widely considered to be the film which made Michael Cane a star. His other titles include lesser-known but well-loved movies including Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine.

Gilbert’s son reported that he had been suffering from dementia for the past decade and passed peacefully in his sleep in Monaco last Friday.

Tributes are being paid by stars and fans alike. Ant-man director Peyton Reed has even promised to pay a small homage to Moonraker in his upcoming sequel Ant-man and The Wasp. Comedian David Walliams also used Twitter to pay tribute to Gilbert, thanking him for “all the joy you brought me & millions of others”. Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have said that the film-maker will be “sorely missed”.
