Harley Quinn was basically the star of Suicide Squad and now, she finally has her own movie. Birds of Prey is colorful, eccentric, and the exact level of energy we need as 2020 gets into full swing.

When the movie begins, Harley Quinn is upset about her relationship with Joker ending, but Jared Leto gets no screen time. This isn’t the story about the infamous Joker and his wild girlfriend. This is the story of Harley Quinn and her all-women superhero squad. Harley crashes a truck into the plant where she pledged her love and makes an impulse decision to buy a hyena that she calls Bruce. She falls apart, parties hard, and then establishes a whole new, empowered identity without her other half.

For Harley, recovery comes in the form of establishing a girl gang made of strong, diverse and brilliant women. Black Canary can crack a cocktail glass with her voice and Renee Montoya is hooked on 80s cop shows. The characters are funny, sassy, and the exact women you’d expect to see kicking ass in a fragmented Gotham city.

In terms of the plot, the movie sags a little in the middle and is not always as riveting as it could perhaps be. In a way, the chaotic, muddled storyline is fitting for our broken, chaotic protagonist. The story is told from her perspective, and so anything less than delicious imperfection would feel like a character betrayal.

There were also some moments in the script that were a little problematic. The sexual violence scenes were of poor taste and although they didn’t detract from the message of female empowerment, they were uncomfortable to watch. Considering the film is one of escapism and a champion of feminity, these moments seemed like a poor decision for a female audience.

Ultimately though, what happens in the movie is unimportant. The reason you’ll love it is down to the brilliant characters, fiery jokes aimed at girls, and the saucy outfits and phenomenal soundtrack. This is the kind of movie that will have you feeling like the badass woman you are. And that’s why Harley Quinn rules.

3.5/5

The first Birds of Prey trailer is finally here!

DC Comics dropped the first official full-length trailer for the Margot Robbie-led feature Tuesday.

Birds of Prey sees Robbie morph into the infamous alter-ego, who in the upcoming feature transforms from Joker’s sidekick to the leader of the group of antiheroes.

“The Joker and I broke up,” she explains, “I wanted a fresh start. But it turns out I wasn’t the only dame in Gotham looking for emancipation.”

Robbie debuted as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad. This time around she’ll be joined by Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), who team up to protect Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is set to hit theaters on February 7, 2020.

We love our comic book heroes, but there is something even more alluring about the supervillains. Perhaps it is the fact they have cooler costumes or perhaps there is something darkly relatable and appealing about these rebellious bad guys. Either way, here are ten of our favorites.

10. Harley Quinn (Batman)

A villain who does whatever the hell she feels like. We loved Margot Robbie’s portrayal in Suicide Squad.

9. Ozymandis (The Watchmen)

DC has a tendency to blur the lines between black and white/good and evil. Ozymandis epitomizes this in his character.

8. Loki (Thor)

He’s been around in mythology for centuries but we love Tom Hiddleston’s punky and rightly mischievous version of Loki.

7. Thanos (Guardians of The Galaxy)

We haven’t seen much of him yet, but we can’t wait to see him attempt to destroy half the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. Big talk from a pretty big guy.

6. Venom (Spider-Man)

Everyone has a dark side, even Spider-Man.

5. Mystique (X-Men)

She alternates between sides but Mystique’s shapeshifting powers make her a powerful ally.

4. Magneto (X-Men)

Magneto is a great villain and a hero from where he’s standing.

3. Catwoman (Batman)

She’s cool, she’s sexy and she doesn’t follow the rules.

2. Hela (Thor)

We loved Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. Her costume was amazing and she effortlessly crushed Thor’s hammer.

1. The Joker (Batman)

“Whatever doesn’t kill you, simply makes you stranger…” An utter nutter who scarily sometimes makes worrying sense… in an insane kind of way.
