The Flash premiered in 2014 as a spinoff of Arrow and quickly became one of the CW’s biggest ratings hits. It helped set up the Arrowverse, but many of the shows in this franchise were canceled before it, leaving room for Superman & Lois and the upcoming Gotham Knights.

Despite being one of the network’s biggest hits, the cancelation of this superhero show doesn’t come as a shocker. The CW’s financial struggles are now public knowledge and we’ve watched them cancel many legacy shows, such as Dynasty and Riverdale, in the past few months.

The showrunner Eric Wallace doesn’t see the show’s cancelation as a tragedy, and he’s proud that his cast and crew made it this far.

“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race,” said Wallace in a statement.

Grant Gustin will return as Barry Allan/The Flash in the final season, which is set to premiere on the CW in 2023 and feature a total of 13 episodes.
