]]>Past Lives came into the night as one of the most-nominated films and walked away with the ceremony’s most coveted accolade. It defeated the likes of Passages, Reality, Showing Up, and A Thousand and One to be named best feature at this year’s Gotham Awards.
As for Anatomy of a Fall, Justine Triet’s latest film emerged victorious in two categories. It defeated the likes of All of Us Strangers and Poor Things to walk away with the trophy for the best international feature, in addition to winning the award for best screenplay.
The TV field at this year’s Gotham Award included some worthy contenders, but none of them could stand their ground to Netflix’s Beef. This series won two awards: breakthrough series under 40 minutes and outstanding performance in a new series (Ali Wong)—while A Small Light was named the best breakthrough series over 40 minutes.
The Gotham Awards kicked off the award season on November 27, at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

]]>All Of Us Strangers is in the running for best international feature, and it will have to beat Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, and Tótem to take this trophy home. Past Lives has been nominated in the best feature field with Passages, Reality, Showing Up, and A Thousand and One, while Beef is the main contender in the TV categories.
2023 is shaping up to be the year of change for Gotham Awards, as the ceremony removed its $35 budget cap for the first time to create “a more inclusive submission pool” of nominees.
“We’re excited to include more voices from around the globe by expanding eligibility for the many brilliant international films and filmmakers who deserve to be in consideration this year. Additionally, with shifting budgets, we’ve decided to eliminate arbitrary budget caps for submission eligibility,” said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute in a statement.
Despite this major change, Gotham Awards are still the place where small indie movies will shine the brightest. We didn’t see many big-budget films make the cut, with the exception of Ryan Gosling’s nod for Barbie and Penélope Cruz’s nomination for Ferrari in the best supporting performance field.
