]]>Although they all performed well, the feature blew its rivals The Darkest Hour, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Dunkirk out the water (no pun intended). Del Toro was a strong favorite to win after winning a series of major awards this year including the title of “Best Director” at the Baftas and the Golden Globes.
Given that the fantasy genre is notorious for performing poorly at the Oscars, it is perhaps no surprise that The Shape of Water was Del Toro’s first nomination as a director. In the spirit of great cinema, however, the academy clearly saw beyond genre and recognized the incredible cinematography and outstanding direction of the movie.
In his politically charged acceptance speech, Del Toro paid homage to his roots and commented on the progress of the diversification of the film industry:
“I am an immigrant … The best thing our industry does is to help erase the lines in the sand when the world tries to make them deeper.”
The award makes Del Toro the third Mexican film-maker to win the best director in the last five years. His victory thus marks the industry’s progress as well as being well deserved in honor of the incredible piece of cinema that is The Shape of Water.
