The 46-year-old actor has been set to direct true-life War World II story Ghost Army for Universal Pictures. 

The studio, which announced the news Tuesday, also confirmed that Affleck will also star in the feature based on the book The Ghost Army of World War II by Rick Beyer and Elizabeth Sayles, as well as the documentary Ghost Army. 

The story follows a squadron of American soldiers who were tasked with deceiving the Nazis in creative ways to make them think that the US had larger troop numbers than it actually did, or that armies were in certain positions when in actuality no armies were even close. Armed with inflatable tanks and sound-effects records, it is said that their deceptions saved countless lives.

The latest version of the script was penned by True Detective scribe, Nic Pizzolatto, who reworked an earlier version by Henry Gayden (Shazam!). According to Variety, Affleck is expected to rework the screenplay once more. 

Affleck’s more recent credit as director is 2016’s period gangster drama for Warner Bros., Live by Night.
