]]>Nomadland managed to beat the likes of Minari and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to win the best picture Oscar, but this wasn’t its only big victory of the night. Frances McDormand won her third best actress Oscar for her performance in this movie, while Chloé Zhao made history as the second woman to collect the trophy for the best director.
Anthony Hopkins made history with The Father, as the oldest person to be rewarded with the best actor Oscar. Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Youn Yuh-jung (Minari) collected the trophies for their supporting performances.
The Father and Judas and the Black Messiah were amongst the movies, with a total of two awards won, together with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Sound of Metal, Soul, and Mank. The list of major winners also included Promising Young Woman (best original screenplay) and Another Round (best international feature film).
The scaled-down 93rd Academy Awards ceremony took place at Los Angeles’ Union Station and Dolby Theatre on April 25th.

]]>One thing that didn’t surprise us at this year’s BAFTAs was the absolute domination of Nomadland. This film cemented its status as the Oscars frontrunner after winning a total of four awards, including best film.
The Nomadland director Chloé Zhao made history as the first woman of color to win the best director award at the BAFTAs, and we expect she’ll repeat her success at the Oscars.
The best actress category brings more uncertainty than ever this year. The BAFTAs provided zero clarity as the award went to Frances McDormand, who didn’t triumph at any other major award shows.
Chadwick Boseman is still the top contender at the Oscars, but Anthony Hopkins managed to pull a major upset at the BAFTAs and became the oldest person to win the award for the best leading actor with The Father.

]]>Without giving anything away, one of the movies greatest strengths is its sheer unpredictability. The plot is constantly shifting and we see some real character development as the characters adapt to deal with their grief.
Despite what we might assume from the trailer, the movie is not an outright attack on the police force and justice system, though it does consider these things. More than this, it is a journey through the complexity of human emotion and perseverance.
The entire cast gave outstanding performances but special credit is owed to Frances McDormand, who we expect will be in the running for Lead Actress at the Oscars.
Overall, the movie is tragic, touching and often dubious. Like Mildred Hayes, we must lean on humor to guide us through the uncertainty that is cleverly intertwined with the plot. A must-see!
4.5/5
