Gyllenhaal will portray Gladys Presley, the mother of Elvis Presley in the Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s film about the king of rock ‘n’ roll.

The drama is described as a story that will “delve into their complex dynamic spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and the loss of innocence in America.”

Luhrmann will direct from a script he wrote with Craig Pearce. He’s best known for helming the features The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge starring Nicole Kidman.

The still untitled feature from Warner Bros. has added Olivia DeJonge to its cast. She joins previously announced Austin Butler as the King and Tom Hanks as his manager Tom Parker. 

“Olivia is capable of manifesting the complex depth and presence that has made Priscilla Presley an icon in her own right,” Luhrmann said. “She’s an extremely talented young actor and the perfect counterpoint to Austin’s Elvis.”

Luhrmann will direct from a script he co-wrote with Craig Pearce. 

The film is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
