The independent action movie is looking to take over the No. 1 spot from the supernatural thriller.

It looks like we’re heading to a surprise upset with Roland Emmerich’s Midway exceeding expectations and Doctor Sleep, well, falling short of them.

Per multiple outlets, Midway grossed $6.3 million on Friday for a projected debut $21 million for the weekend, while Doctor Sleep is looking to gross about $18 million — well under expectations of $25 million to $30 million.

Midway is said to be one of the most expensive independent movies ever made. But that didn’t help it impress critics which have given it a 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Battling for third place is Universal’s Last Christmas, starring Henry Golding and Emilia Clarke, and Paramount’s family-friendly Playing With Fire, both expected to earn circa $13 million.

The first official trailer for The Shinning sequel Doctor Sleep finally introduces us to an adult Danny Torrance.

In the screen adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 horror novel and sequel to The Shinning, Danny (played by Ewan McGregor), Jack Nicholson’s on-screen son, is battling a drinking problem and the emergence of strange powers.

“When I was a kid, I bumped into these things. I don’t know about magic. I always called it the shining,” he says in the trailer.

“We pick up Dan in New Jersey and in the throes of his alcoholism, kind of right at rock bottom is where we meet him,” writer-director Mike Flanagan said. “He’s nomadic, he’s violent, he’s crawled so far into a bottle that there doesn’t seem to be an easy way out.”

“It’s really kind of a strange experience to meet your hero kind at their most awful version of themselves. Structurally, it’s really fascinating, from a writing point of view. You kind of feel like, ‘This is our hero, ladies and gentlemen, you’re going to meet him puking.’ So, yeah, we pick up Dan at the lowest point of his life,” Flanagan added.

“More than anything, this is a story about his redemption and trying to avoid repeating the same fate that his father had to deal with, outside of the hotel, just with his own addiction.”

The clip features iconic Overlook Hotel moments, including the old woman in the bathtub, the Grady twins in the hallway and the blood tidal wave.

The feature also stars Carl Lumbly, Zahn McLarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe, and Cliff Curtis.

Doctor Sleep hits theaters November 8.

The director of The Haunting of Hill House is creating a movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep.

Doctor Sleep is King’s sequel to the terrifying story of the Torrance family, The Shining. The sequel will be based on the grownup version of traumatized Danny Torrance, who is to be played by Ewan McGregor.

Stephen King is the master of fictional horror and after the huge success of The Haunting of Hill House, it’s fair to say that director Michael Flannagan is a master of the genre too. Putting King’s story together with Flannagan’s directional skills is a recipe for genius.

Still, the director is treading carefully when it comes to making the adaptation. He has expressed his concerns about protecting The Shining.

“There is no version of the world where I am trying not to acknowledge one of the greatest films ever made. There’s no upside in shying away from that reality,” he said.

“At the same time, this is not The Shining. It’s its own story and in a very specific way,” he continued. “If you’ve read the book, you know exactly why it’s so different, but it’s quite a tightrope that we’re walking, I think.”

“I’m having a great time doing it. I’m just going to get the movie out and then turn off the internet for two weeks and see how it all goes.”

Stephen King is presumably pleased to learn that the task of bringing his novel Doctor Sleep is in the hands of Mike Flannagan. He recently praised the director on Twitter.

King tweeted: “THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, revised and remodelled by Mike Flanagan. I don’t usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius, really. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.”

The movie adaptation of Doctor Sleep will be in cinemas January 2020.
