The Father and Judas and the Black Messiah were amongst the movies, with a total of two awards won, together with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Sound of Metal, Soul, and Mank. We’re less than two weeks away from the Academy Awards, and the BAFTAs are the last major ceremony leading up to them. This award show gave us a couple of crucial insights, and here are the most important takeaways from the night full of record-breaking surprises.

“Nomadland” For the Win

One thing that didn’t surprise us at this year’s BAFTAs was the absolute domination of Nomadland. This film cemented its status as the Oscars frontrunner after winning a total of four awards, including best film.

Chloé Zhao Makes History

The Nomadland director Chloé Zhao made history as the first woman of color to win the best director award at the BAFTAs, and we expect she’ll repeat her success at the Oscars.

Best Actress Race

The best actress category brings more uncertainty than ever this year. The BAFTAs provided zero clarity as the award went to Frances McDormand, who didn’t triumph at any other major award shows.

Hopkins Breaks Records

Chadwick Boseman is still the top contender at the Oscars, but Anthony Hopkins managed to pull a major upset at the BAFTAs and became the oldest person to win the award for the best leading actor with The Father.

Kumail Nanjiani is in negotiations to join Marvel’s superhero adventure feature.

The Oscar nominated comedian is the latest actor to venture into the world of superheroes. Already attached to the project is actress Angelina Jolie.

The feature, which is set to shoot this year is directed by Chloe Zhao from a script drafted by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.

Based on the 1976 comic book series created by Jack Kirby, the story follows two groups of super-powered and near-immortal creators created after the Celestials experimented on humans. The Eternals and their villainous offshoot, the Deviants, have battled each other throughout history.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie will play Sersi, an outgoing Eternal who is not afraid to move amongst humankind. Details about what character Nanjiani would play are being kept under wraps.

You can see Nanjiani next in Columbia Pictures’ Men in Black: International and Universal Pictures’ The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.
