Part three of the Netflix Original Chilling Adventures of Sabrina just landed and it is without a doubt the best season yet.

After a promising debut and second season, the Netflix show has finally hit its stride. Part three is weirder, darker, and more imaginative than ever before. Less focus is put on Sabrina’s human life and more focus is put on the weird and wonderful world of witchcraft and dark magic. This time, her human friends are taken on the journey with her in even more interesting and compelling ways.

In addition to introducing a host of unusual subplots, the third installment pays attention to worldbuilding and new mythology. It submerges viewers in a whole new world where anything goes and nothing is as it seems. At times, it feels as though Sabrina risks being too wild for its own good, delving into the weird for the sheer sake of it. This worry quickly fades once you let go of your expectations and allow yourself to become immersed in the story with all its quirks and charm.

In terms of the core plotline, Sabrina wastes no time kicking things off. Our teenage witch dives straight into the pits of hell where she finds Nick and discovers the repercussions of Lucifer’s fall. Pagan witches begin to rise up, threatening to summon the old gods and secure humanity’s doom. It’s all very dramatic.

The stakes may be higher this time around, but this is not at the expense of the show’s initial charm. The horror is still mixed in with a healthy dose of teenage angst and young romance, it’s just mixed in with more death and destruction. Theo finally gets a love interest, pop references are continuously fired, and the cast unveils a series of emotional moments in the face of literal hell and hell on earth.

All in all, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has earned its place in the camp horror hall of fame. The series remains brilliantly witty, charming, and continues to reach new heights of imagination. As far as we are concerned, season four can’t come soon enough.

Netflix set a premier date for season 3 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Our favorite teenage witch is set to return very soon with the streaming giant’s announcement over the weekend that the series will return on January 24, 2020.

The end of season two saw Sabrina trapping Lucifer in Nick’s body and sending him back to Hell. Here’s the official synopsis for the forthcoming season: “Part Three finds Sabrina reeling from the harrowing events of Part Two. Though she defeated her father Lucifer, the Dark Lord remains trapped within the human prison of her beloved boyfriend, Nicholas Scratch. Sabrina can’t live with herself, knowing that Nick made the ultimate sacrifice and is suffering, burning in Hell under Madam Satan’s watchful eye. So with an assist from her mortal friends, “The Fright Club” (consisting of Harvey, Rosalind, and Theo), Sabrina makes it her mission to free him from eternal damnation and bring him back into her arms. However, the Dark Lord’s unseating has sent shockwaves through the realms—and, with no one on the throne, Sabrina must assume the title of “Queen” to defend it against a challenger, the handsome Prince of Hell Caliban. Meanwhile, in Greendale, a mysterious carnival rolls into town, bringing with it a threat to the Spellmans and the coven: A tribe of pagans looking to resurrect an ancient evil…”

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is worlds apart from Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and is a spooky, compelling, could-be cult classic.

The series to binge-watch this Halloween was Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The show is an adaptation of the ’90s popular TV show Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. The reboot also fits in with CW’s Riverdale, which was bought to us by the same creative team. There are definitely references to the show, which will please any fans of the comics universe.

The series kicks off with Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) planning for her 16th birthday, like any other teenager. The only difference is that her mother died when she was a child, and her father is a warlock. She is therefore put in a difficult and unique position, where she must decide whether she will declare her devotion to serving Satan with her father, or remain in the human world.

It might seem like a no-brainer for Sabrina to keep her powers, but it would mean giving up her friends and her boyfriend. Her relationship with Harvey is what grounds her in reality, and what keeps us emotionally invested in the show. Her mortal relationships are intricately crafted, and her loyalty to them is believable and enjoyable to watch.

On the other hand, the magical side of the show is a lot more extreme and dark than we expected. The leaders of the family coven try to convert Sabrina to the dark side and Michelle Gomez is fantastically charming in her antagonistic role as Mary Wardell.  Sabrina is dragged to the underworld and back, constantly reminding the audience that this version of Sabrina is nothing like the peppy tween witch in the ’90s. Instead, she is fierce, tormented and stuck on a literal hellscape.

The atmosphere of the show is consequently Gothic and gruesome, sustaining a powerful feeling of haunting throughout, both metaphorically and literally. We would have liked to have seen more of the Academy of Unseen Arts, but there is plenty of room for this in the second season.

Overall, the show did a good job of setting up Sabrina as a Buffy-esque style heroine, and the adventures certainly were as “chilling” as promised. Consequently, any times the show is confused or lacks in something can be forgiven, as the series really does have potential.
