By now, we’ve learned to expect a new season of Better Call Saul to be slower and less action-packed than Breaking Bad. The show concentrates less on epic shootdowns and more on grueling character development. There’s a particular nuisance to the series that is rare to find in modern television. There is no leaning on CGI or special effects but instead, the focus is on the meticulous crafting of each scene via the phenomenal cast and signature camera pans.

Season five continues to pay enormous attention to detail while also driving plot development up to the Breaking Bad timeline. Tensions continue to rise between Gus and the cartel, and Jimmie is now and officially established as Saul Goodman. At the start of the season, he dresses in an eccentric, distinctively Saul Goodman suit and sets up a temporary base in a circus tent. He hands out free untraceable phones with his number on speed dial and promises clients 50% off his services for a week. Kim isn’t too happy with the immoral implications of his decision, but as the season unravels, she is pulled further into Saul’s unconventional way of doing things.

One of the remarkable achievements of Better Call Saul is that it successfully builds suspense even though we already know that the characters we care about most will survive beyond the start of the Breaking Bad timeline. Even though we know that Saul will be fine, when he drags himself through the desert in the antepenultimate episode, there are moments where it feels like he really might not make it.

The desert episode may be painfully slow but it sets up some important relationship developments. Mike and Saul leave the desert with an unspoken bond and after that point, Mike begins to trust Saul with important information. Saul realizes that Kim is the person he cares about the most and Kim equally realizes that Saul is far more important than the corporate clients she works with. At the moment, Saul almost gives up and Kim believes him dead, something happens to the characters which changes their relationship permanently. And then Kim breaks bad.

In the epic season finale, things heat up massively for Lalo and Nacho down in Mexico. Lalo may have started out as a new character that fans were unsure about but now, he is a highlight of the show. He is all about the showmanship and one of the biggest mysteries left in the series is what will happen to him and Nacho prior to the Breaking Bad timeline. And it feels like that timeline is getting pretty close.

It looks like it’s the end of the Breaking Bad universe.

Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould and co-creator Vince Gilligan confirmed during the show’s Television Critics’ Association winter press tour panel that the Breaking Bad prequel has been renewed for a sixth but final season on the cabler.

“From day one of Better Call Saul, my dream was to tell the complete story of our complicated and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill – now AMC and Sony are making that dream come true,” said Gould. “We couldn’t be more grateful to the fans and critics who are making this journey possible.  Next month we start work on the sixth and final season — we’re going to do our damnedest to stick the landing.”

“Greenlighting a prequel to one of the most iconic series in television history is one of the boldest swings that AMC has ever taken. But, thanks to the creative genius of [co-creators] Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, it has also been one of the most rewarding,” said Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios. “It has been an absolute joy to collaborate with the extraordinarily talented team on Better Call Saul, which — five seasons in — continues to deliver some of the best storytelling and most beautifully nuanced performances on television today. We congratulate Vince, Peter, our producers, writers and cast on a remarkable run and look forward to sharing this final chapter with fans.”

Season 6 will consist of 13 episodes.

Season 5 of Better Call Saul premieres on February 23.

As the 2010s draw to a close, it’s time to look back at the TV series that defined the decade. With a 9.5/10 rating on IMDB, there’s no arguing that the critically acclaimed American TV drama Breaking Bad made its mark. But is it decade-defining?

When the show first aired in 2008, audiences were captivated by the uniqueness of the plot. This was not the story of Pablo Escobar, it was the story of a high school chemistry teacher with cancer and how he came to run his own meth empire. It was Vince Gilligan’s answer to the question of how an ordinary person breaks bad. And we were all hooked.

As the series unfolded, Gilligan boldly paved the way for character-driven TV. Yes, Breaking Bad is filled with action and shock factor, but what makes it so compelling is our fascination with the characters – our fascination with Walter White. By the time Breaking Bad wrapped up in 2013, shows with weak protagonists no longer made the cut. Gilligan raised the bar by satisfying our craving for interesting characters with stories we had never heard before. Masterpieces like Suits and House of Cards would follow.

When Breaking Bad wrapped up, we were offered Better Call Saul. This was Gilligan’s prequel that was even more character-orientated than the original series. Episodes were slow-paced, deliberate, and meticulously crafted. Fans became just as fascinated and obsessed with B-character Saul Goodman’s story as they had been with Heisenberg’s. This is what a prequel should be – something that adds to the story rather than clings helplessly to the bones of the original. It keeps the Breaking Bad fantasy alive for fans while offering more layers to a story that we thought had already finished.

Finally, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul proved that television doesn’t need to be full of epic moments to satisfy audiences. In an era where the TV golden rule seemed to be “the bigger, the better”, Gilligan offered us the infamous bottle episode, “Fly”. The episode stripped back the drama and followed Jessie and Mr. White in a single room, searching for a fly. This wasn’t a final-showdown moment but the opposite. It was a magnifying glass to Walter’s mental state and his diminishing relationship with Jessie. Gilligan massively slashed the budget for the episode, and yet many critics consider it to be one of the best. Breaking Bad thus proved that things don’t always need to be ‘kicking off’ so to speak for television to be interesting.

And in a nutshell, that’s how Breaking Bad raised the bar and became the most iconic TV show of the decade.

Enjoy each episode of Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul as much as you can as it seems like the show might have just two more seasons left.

Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Gus Fring on the show, recently chatted with Collider and said that this popular AMC’s series might end with season six.

“It’s tricky with [co-creator Vince Gilligan]. If you look at the Breaking Bad model, he said five years, five seasons, but it was really five and six.” – Esposito told Collider before discussing the possible end for Better Call Saul.

“There will be six seasons,” – he explained. “It seems like that’s the way, the comfortable way, to end this show.”

Several media outlets approached AMC following Esposito’s statement but the network had no comments.

Although the news that Better Call Saul might end after the sixth season might be heartbreaking for the fans of the show, the fact is that we have still a long way to go. The show wrapped up the season four in October 2018, while the season five recently entered in production and is expected to air at some point in 2020.

Bad news for Better Call Saul fans.. the show won’t return until 2020.

To begin with, Better Call Saul was a way to ease the blow after the Breaking Bad season 5 finale. Now though, it’s an amazing show in its own right and we are just as excited to watch the next season as we were when we were watching Heisenberg take on Gus Fring.

Unfortunately, there’s no binge-watching when it comes to the spin-off show. Each episode comes out weekly on Netflix and the seasons drop once a year… at least that’s what we thought.

Now, it seems that we will have a two year wait between seasons. At least that’s what AMC’s President of Entertainment Networks Sarah Barnett has said.

“We said on our most recent earnings call that the series would come back for season five next year,” Barnett told Vulture. “It’s driven by talent needs, which we would not override if it would result in a worse show.”

When asked whether we’re getting to closer the endgame of the series, Barnett said: “Well, we know clearly the end was already written before the beginning began. [Laughs.] The writers, they have a very particular, very clear sense of the arc of their show.”

She added that she is “really not” giving anything away.

Spin-off series were a common occurrence in the world of television in the past, but nowadays it seems like this trend is even more popular. Just having one spin-off isn’t enough these days and several shows like ABC’s popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, The CW’s The Vampire Diaries and teen drama Pretty Little Liars, went on to inspire two spin-offs each in recent years.

Although most of these spin-offs are not worthy of your time, some of them manage to retain the quality of the original. Don’t worry; you won’t have to use the hit-and-miss method to find them, since we did the dirty work and brought you the five best TV spin-off shows of all time that you should watch. Let’s get going.

CSI: Miami

Original: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

While CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation inspired countless spin-offs, CSI: Miami remains the most popular and, if we dare to say, the best one. The series follows the group of detectives, led by Lieutenant Horatio Caine (David Caruso), who are using modern technology and unconventional methods of investigation to crack the most complicated cases.

Family Matters

Original: Perfect Strangers

Focusing on Perfect Strangers‘ character Harriette Winslow and her family, Family Matters was one of those shows that managed to become more popular than the original. It was a big rating hit with 215 episodes being aired from 1989 to 1998.

Better Call Saul

Original: Breaking Bad

The youngest entry on our list of best TV spin-off series of all time, Better Call Saul is based on Breaking Bad character Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). It focuses on Goodman’s life before events in Breaking Bad, and has met with similar critical acclaim as the original series.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Original: Star Trek: The Original Series

Premiering 18 years after the original, Star Trek: The Next Generation follows a new generation of Starfleet officers led by the now-iconic Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who embark on a mission to explore the unknown parts of space. It is now considered one of the greatest television shows of all time.

Frasier

Original: Cheers

The last entry on our list of best TV spin-off series of all time, Frasier, sees Cheers‘ character Dr. Frasier Crane leaving Boston and returning to his home town of Seattle, where he is trying to reconnect with his father and brother. It went on to become one of the most acclaimed and popular sitcoms of all time and winning 37 Emmy Awards during its 11-season run.

Another Breaking Bad cameo has made its way into Better Call Saul (BCS).

Since the prequel started, BCS has featured numerous Breaking Bad characters. The list includes fan favorites such as Mike Ehrmantraut, Gus Fring, and Hector Salamanca as well as less regular Breaking Bad characters like Lydia, Tuco and Crazy 8.

In “Something Beautiful”, Vince Gilligan added another fantastic cameo to the series. Dorky, lovable and almost innocent chemist Gale Boetticher was added in a short scene when he complains to Gus about the poor quality of some drugs he has been testing.

Although the scene was short, it symbolizes a small step closer to Breaking Bad’s timeline. Fans are speculating whether the series will end when Breaking Bad starts, meaning Walter White and Jesse could potentially make appearances.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gilligan said of this possibility: “I desperately want to see both of them on Better Call Saul. Peter [Gould] wants it, the writers do, the actors do.

“It wouldn’t feel as satisfying if it was just a cameo or an Alfred Hitchcock walkthrough,” he continued. “I think we’ve waited long enough. We damn well better have a good reason for them to show up. I just hope we figure it out because I’ve got to hear, ‘Yeah, bitch!’ one more time.”

Bob Odenkirk has said he wasn’t sure about Better Call Saul at first and that he dislikes the character of Saul Goodman.

In an interview with EWOdenkirk who plays Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, said he thought the show was a “huge risk” and that he doubted that Saul was likable enough as a character for the Breaking Bad spin-off to work.

“I always thought it was a huge risk, and all I wanted was them to do it for their own reasons, and not because I asked them to do it or pressured them to do it,” he said. “So I basically backed off every single time it was suggested to me. I think Vince might have thought it was kind of weird to suggest to an actor, ‘What if I create a show for you?’ and have that actor look at him and go, ‘I dunno. It’s your free time. Do what you want with your time.’

“My first question when we talked was, ‘How do you make him likable?’ Because I didn’t like that guy. I mean, I like watching him—like a car wreck when you’re not in it. It’s intriguing. It pulls you in. But he’s a bad guy.”

He also spoke about the upcoming season and emphasized that he is reluctant for his character to become Saul:

“I’m having to confront the fact that he is becoming Saul, and I don’t like Saul,” he shares. “If he was my friend, I would say, ‘Don’t go that route.'”

Season 4 of Better Call Saul will premiere on August 4th.

Better Call Saul Season 4 is finally on its way. Here is everything you need to know about the new season.

Season 3 spoilers ahead.

When?

AMC has confirmed that season four will premiere this summer. The release date is August 6th in US.

We can reasonably expect the trailer pretty soon, given that it usually airs three months before the upcoming season premieres.

Who?

Bob Odenkirk will return as Jimmy McGill, along with Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler and Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut.

We will be seeing more of Giancarlo Esposito as Breaking Bad‘s freakishly calm and collected villain Gus Fring and the spooky Salamanca cousins, Leonel and Marco, will return with Daniel and Luis Moncada.

It’s very possible that we’ll see the return of more Breaking Bad characters such as Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis) and Lydia (Laura Fraser) who made appearances in season 3.

It has also been confirmed that a new “very important character” will be entered into the show. A man called Lalo is referred to in Breaking Bad when he first meet Saul.

“[Other than Lalo], we have a couple of new characters that we’ll be reintroducing to the world. We probably don’t want to say who yet, just to preserve the fun of that for the fans,” added executive producer Melissa Bernstein.

What?

Below is the AMC  official synopsis for season four:

“In Better Call Saul‘s fourth season, Chuck’s death catalyses Jimmy McGill’s transformation into Saul Goodman. In the wake of his loss, Jimmy takes steps into the criminal world that will put his future as a lawyer – and his relationship with Kim – in jeopardy.

“Chuck’s death deeply affects former colleagues Howard and Kim as well, putting the two of them once again on opposite sides of a battle sparked by the Brothers McGill. Meanwhile, Mike Ehrmantraut takes a more active role as Madrigal Electromotive’s newest (and most thorough) security consultant.

“It’s a volatile time to be in Gus Fring’s employ, as Hector’s collapse sends shock waves throughout the Albuquerque underworld and throws the cartel into chaos – tearing apart both Gus and Nacho’s well-laid plans. While Gus changes course, Nacho finds himself in the crosshairs of deadly forces.”

We can’t wait!

The Critics’ Choice Awards returned to Los Angeles on Sunday night and set the tone for the rest of the Oscars race. Everything Everywhere All at Once was the biggest winner of the night with a total of five awards, while Better Call Saul won big in the TV field with a total of three trophies.

The list of major winners in the acting categories included Brendan Fraser (best actor for The Whale), Cate Blanchett (best actress for Tár), and Angela Bassett (best supporting actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).

The TV field was pretty crowded this year, but Better Call Saul managed to win three trophies for its final season: best drama series, best actor in a drama series (Bob Odenkirk), and best supporting actor in a drama series (Giancarlo Esposito). The list of winners also included Abbott Elementary, The Dropout, and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story with two awards each.
