It’s been over a year and a half since season 4 of Better Call Saul wrapped up and now that season five is here, we can’t wait to find out what will happen in the final stint leading up to the events of Breaking Bad.

The season five premiere begins with a flash-forward of Saul Goodman after he has received his do-over following Heisenberg being found out. Saul is constantly having to keep an eye open for anyone who might suspect his true identity. When a former Alboquoerque resident spots him in the mall and recognizes him from one of his old adverts, it looks like Saul may soon be caught.

Following the opening credits, we see Jimmie change his name officially to Saul Goodman. Season four saw Jimmie’s drastic descent into Saul and now, he has fully embraced his new identity. He kicks things off by offering discounts to felons so if they do commit a crime, they get 50% off his representation. He hands out a stack of phones with his number on speed dial, determined to become the go-to lawyer for Alborquorque’s criminal youth.

Meanwhile, Kim is growing increasingly suspicious of Saul’s activity. In the closing scene of the episode, Kim’s client chooses to go to trial instead of taking the deal she is suggesting. Saul comes up with an elaborate scheme to get him to take the deal, but Kim shuts him down and tells him she doesn’t want to scam a client. Moments later, when saul has left the room, she uses his idea to get the results she wants. Could Kim be breaking bad too?

Things are also heating up for Fring and his crew. Lalo Salamanca is onto Gus and Nacho is in hot water trying to win over his trust. It seems like there is going to be a lot more action in season five and it looks like the construction of Gus’ meth superlab is going to be a little more complicated than he initially anticipated.

As far as season premieres go, Better Call Saul has successfully whet our appetite for the episodes to come. The show has shifted from slow character development to the feeling that something big in the air is brewing. Bring it on.

5/5
