Oppenheimer is definitely one of the films that 2023 will be remembered by, and it’s getting credit where credit is due! Christopher Nolan’s atom-bomb epic topped the list of Oscar nominations with 13 nods, followed by Poor Things with 11 and Killers of the Flower Moon with 10.

Oppenheimer will be competing alongside Poor Things and Flower Moon for the coveted best picture trophy, where the list of contenders also includes American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest.

All three films are also in the running for the best director award, along with Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Triet) and The Zone of Interest (Jonathan Glazer).

Oppenheimer also received three nods on the acting side, thanks to its stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr., in addition to competing in multiple technical categories, such as best cinematography, best film editing, and best sound.

The list of major nominees also includes Netflix’s musical biopic Maestro with seven nods, and the summer blockbuster Barbie with eight – which shockingly didn’t receive nominations for best director (Greta Gerwig) and best leading actress (Margot Robbie).

The 96th Academy Awards are coming back in style on March 10, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting ABC’s live ceremony from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

From Oppenheimer to Killers of the Flower Moon, 2023 has given us many epic movies, but which ones are destined to build the most passionate fanbase and stand the test of time? We’re bringing you five amazing, slightly underrated films with the potential to reach cult status and be quoted and referenced for the years to come.

Barbie

Barbie is the highest-grossing film of 2023, so including it is a no-brainer, but that’s not the reason why it made it to our list. Greta Gerwig’s brilliant script gave us countless quotable moments that will help this film become a staple of modern popular culture.

Bottoms

Every year, we get at least one raunchy teen comedy with cult classic potential, and Bottoms is destined to follow in the footsteps of Superbad and Booksmart.

Saltburn

Emerald Fennell took us on one wild ride with her latest film Saltburn, and its fans won’t be able to resist returning to this sprawling English countryside estate time and time again.

Poor Things

Poor Things is a major Oscar contender this awards season, but it’s also one of the wildest things we’ve seen all year, and Bella Baxter’s incredible journey will be impossible to forget.

Talk To Me

A24 has given us some pretty amazing horror films, but Talk To Me is their highest-grossing one yet. It centers on a group of friends using a mysterious hand to conjure spirits, and its sequel is already in development.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association finally unveiled the Golden Globe nominations – and they’re truly an embarrassment of riches. Barbie led the way in the movie field with nine nominations, while Succession made history as the most-nominated TV show in a single year.

2023 has definitely been the year of Barbie, and it’s not a shocker to see Greta Gerwig’s film lead the Golden Globe nominations. It received a total of nine nods, including the best comedy or musical, alongside Air, American Fiction, The Holdovers, May December, and Poor Things.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer led the way in the drama categories with eight nods, starting with the best drama film. Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest also received nominations for this prestigious award.

The final season of Succession impressed the Golden Globes voters so much that it made history as the most-nominated series in a single year. It scored a total of nine nods, starting with the best drama series, and multiple acting nods for its ensemble cast, including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Alexander Skarsgård, and J. Smith-Cameron.

The Golden Globe Awards winners will be announced on January 7, 2024, when the ceremony is set to take place at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

No film this summer created more buzz than Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and its box office numbers reflect its enormous success. After less than two months in theatres, Barbie passed The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest-grossing film of the year so far.

Barbie finally crossed the $1.365 billion mark at the global box office on September 2, and its earnings are still rising. By doing so, it became the highest-earning film at the global box office of 2023, overcoming many obstacles, from bans in several countries to tough competition in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Barbie’s latest box office milestone doesn’t come as a shocker, considering how well it’s been doing since hitting the theatres on July 21. It set several opening weekend records with its $356.3 million global opening, and it went on to become the highest-grossing film solely directed by a woman and Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film of all time.

Barbie also helped the summer box office cross the $4 billion mark domestically for the first time in the pandemic era, but it wasn’t the only movie responsible for this impressive number. Other top stateside earners this summer include Christopher Nolan’s historic biopic Oppenheimer, Sony’s animated superhero movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake.

There was no doubt about Barbie being a mega-hit once it hit the theatres, but its opening weekend shattered everyone’s expectations. The story of Mattel’s iconic doll blew us away with its amazing $337 million opening and set serval major records along the way.

Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Greta Gerwig, Barbie took its titular heroine on a path of self-discovery that forced her to change her outlook on what it means to be a woman in the real world. Her visionary take on Barbie’s journey was met with critical acclaim and amazing box office numbers following the film’s premiere on July 21.

Barbie knocked it out of the park with a $337 million global opening, racking in $155 million in North America and an additional $182 million in other territories. This marks the biggest opening of the year so far and the highest-grossing weekend for a film directed by a woman.

These numbers are even more impressive when you remember that Warner Bros. predicted a $75 million domestic debut, and the company’s president of international theatrical distribution, Andrew Cripps, was blown away after seeing them.

“The incredible worldwide results we’ve seen are a testament to the filmmakers’ singular vision to provide a fun and engaging experience that audiences of all ages are responding to in a fun and powerful way,” said Cripps in a statement.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Ryan Gosling on the big screen, but he’s gearing up for a glorious comeback. One of his most exciting upcoming projects will see him play Ken to Margot Robbie’s Barbie in the upcoming movie about everyone’s favorite childhood doll.

The Barbie movie has been in development since 2018, when Robbie was first attached to the project. Mattel has kept pretty quiet about this movie for a while, but they managed to pique our interest after announcing they hired Greta Gerwig as a director. She’s also in charge of writing the script alongside her frequent creative partner Noah Baumbach.

As for Gosling, Deadline reports that he initially declined the role due to his busy schedule. As pre-production dragged out, he agreed to come back on board after Warner Bros. kept insisting he’s their one and only choice to play Ken.

Gosling hasn’t appeared in any new movies since playing  Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s biopic First Man in 2018. He currently has several projects in development, and we’ll next get to see him in the action thriller The Gray Man by Anthony and Joe Russo, also starring Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and Regé-Jean Page.
