Avatar: The Way of Water has been setting records left and right ever since its premiere and it’s showing no signs of stopping. James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel neared the $1.4 billion mark at the global box office during its third weekend in theatres.

The Way of Water rang in the New Year with $1.379 billion earned worldwide, and it’s especially popular overseas. Its international box office revenue now stands at $957 million and it’s set to cross $1 billion in offshore earnings alone later this week.

The Way of Water is currently the 14th highest-earning film of all time, after passing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Black Panther. It’s safe to expect its earnings will rise even higher, and it has the potential to become one of a handful of films that crossed the coveted $2 billion mark at the box office.

Avatar: The Way of Water premiered on December 16, after a 13-year-long wait, and we’ve seen it set several box office milestones following its release. After just 14 days in theatres, it became the sixth-fastest film to cross the billion-dollar mark and the fastest to do so in 2022. It’s currently the second highest-grossing film of 2022, but it’s close to passing Top Gun: Maverick, which earned $1.488 billion worldwide.

James Cameron has been working on the follow-up to his smash hit Avatar for over a decade and he’s finally ready to share it with the world. The title of this highly-anticipated sequel has finally been unveiled at CinemaCon, together with the first trailer.

Avatar 2 is now officially known as Avatar: The Way of Water and it’s set to premiere on December 16. The first trailer premiered at CinemaCon, but it won’t take long for the general audience to see it. It will be shown ahead of screenings of Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before being released online.

Cameron wasn’t able to attend CinemaCon because he’s “hard at work putting the final touches on the film” in New Zealand but promised that the new movie will push the limits in every possible sense.

“I wanted our return to Pandora to be something really special. Every shot is designed for the biggest screen, highest resolution, and most immersive 3D available. I think we pulled it off,” said Cameron.

Producer Jon Landau attended CinemaCon in person and he shared a promising vision for the rest of the franchise. Three more Avatar movies are on the way, and he described them as “a connected saga” with the Sully family at its heart.
