]]>Bassett came close to winning an Oscar on two occasions in the past, and she’s finally getting credit where credit is due. She lost the best supporting actress trophy for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to Jamie Lee Curtis just this winter, 30 years after receiving her first nod for playing Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It.
Academy President Janet Yang praised Bassett for continuing to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting across her decades-long career. She’ll be joined by the actor, producer, and writer Mel Brooks, veteran editor Carol Littleton, and Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter, who’s set to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
The Honorary Oscars are supposed “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.” The class of 2023 will receive their awards at the upcoming Governors Awards, taking place on November 18 in Los Angeles.

The late night show host first asked about how production on Black Panther 2 was going.
“[It’s] going along. Coming along,” she told Jimmy. “Amazing, absolutely.”
But Jimmy was pushing for more, asking, “You were telling me backstage that they decided to change the costume of Black Panther?” Going along with the joke, Angela quipped, “Jimmy, I was telling you that in confidence. You are now—you did not!”
Black Panther 2 is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
