We may not have seen the last of the Alien franchise…

Believe it or not, the original science-fiction feature came out 40 years ago.

Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, and Ian Holm brought to life the film about a space crew that had to contend with the rather aggressive extraterrestrial.

The franchise extended with the inclusion of three sequels, Aliens in 1986, Alien 3 in 1992, and Alien Resurrection in 1997.

While James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet handled the sequels, original director, Ridley Scott, worked on the prequels. These included Prometheus in 2012 and Alien: Covenant, which came out in 2017.

Reports now claim that the Blade Runner director is working on another.

According to Variety, work is being done for a third prequel, which will possibly be titled Alien: Awakening.

While nothing about the plot or production has yet been confirmed, it is believed that Scott will once again assume directing duties.

Aliens are great but setting a movie in space takes sci-fi to a whole new level. We haven’t included any of the Star Wars movies on our list because let’s face it, there wouldn’t be room for any other movies if we did.

Interstellar

Interstellar is both an incredible cinematic journey as well as an emotional one.

The Martian

Being stranded on Mars is probably most people’s worst nightmare. The Martian is a story that celebrates how far we have come and the value of human intellect when accompanied with our survival instinct.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

It might not be entirely set in space but the moments when it is are extremely memorable.

2001: A Space Odyssey

This movie captures the terror and wonder of space better than any other. It cost Alfonso Cuarón $100 million to capture the shot of existential panic when Frank realizes he is going to spend the rest of his lift drifting though space.

Gravity

Gravity is definitely one to watch in the cinema. The visuals are astounding.

Star Trek (2009)

The Star Trek universe is just part of the reason that fans get obsessed. The rest is down to the raw emotion and pure messages that the franchise shares.

Guardians of the Galaxy

It’s hilarious, colorful and insanely charming. It’s not surprising it appeals to both Marvel fans and superhero amateurs alike.

Apollo 13

If you prefer practicality over existentialism, this is probably the space movie for you.

Wall-E

Wall-E is a Pixar favorite. It might have been the uncontrollable advancement of technology which got humans to their state in Wall-E but it takes one adorable robot to help people rediscover their humanity.

Alien (1979)

Alien still continues to horrify almost forty years later. The uncanny feel of the movie and the way that silence interacts with shocking sound makes it a classic.

Everyone likes a good horror movie, right? Ok, maybe not everyone, but there is a large number of moviegoers who like the suspense, blood and gore mix that only horror movies can deliver.

Compared to other movie genres, the horror movies always had bigger chances to become a franchise or film series. The reason is simple; if you have a good villain/s or a way to scare people, you make most of it. Now, the history of cinema has given us some cult psychological and sci-fi to slasher horror movie franchises, but which one is the best? Well, we decided to give our take on that by making a list of five best horror movie film series. Like it? Hate it? Let us know in the comment section below.

5. Scream

We begin our list of best horror movie film series with one of the best horror franchises from the ’90s. The story of Scream revolves around a girl named Sydney Prescott and her friends, who get targeted by a crazy serial killer. The original Scream movie from 1996 is without a doubt the best one out there, but the three sequels are definitely watchable.

4. A Nightmare on Elm Street

Starting in 1984, A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic that managed to keep its grim and dark atmosphere throughout all nine movies released to date. Franchise’s centerpiece, Freddy Kruger, is the ultimate villain from nightmares, and that is exactly what he delivers to his victims. If you want the same treatment, then this is a franchise you can’t miss out on.

3. Friday the 13th

Jason Voorhees surely takes place as one of the biggest and most recognizable movie serial killers out there. He is simply a horror icon, a rock star in his own twisted, demented way. Friday the 13th franchise is another classic with its own unique atmosphere. There are 12 movies in the series, some great, others not so, but all definitely worth watching.

2. Halloween

Original Halloween from 1978 might be the first horror slasher movie ever. It follows Michael Mayers as he escapes the mental asylum after being locked up for killing his family as a boy. The Halloween franchise has the all the quality of a good horror movie and accompanied by one of the most recognizable soundtracks, it is bound to send chills down your spine.

1. Alien

Compared to some other horror film series, Alien movies haven’t aged a bit. The original is one of the best horror movies ever and the sequels, while not on par with the first one, are still thrilling and nail-biting. The Alien film series has set standards for horror franchises across the world and is rightfully at the top of our best horror movie film series list. The cold atmosphere, the dark setting, the stunning visuals, the terrifying alien, the acting – it has everything for a true masterpiece.
