Season 1 of Ricky Gervais’ After Life is a darkly comical, poignant exploration of life following the death of a loved one. The season concluded on a cynical yet positive note and earned a reputation for being one of Gervais’ finer creations. Unfortunately, Gervais ruined the show by making a second season.

Season two begins in a similar way to season one. Tony is struggling with everyday life and confesses that he feels sad all the time. It turns out that he didn’t pursue things further with the nurse and he is still a jerk to the people around him. The only time he seems truly happy is when he is watching old home videos of his deceased wife. These moments are touching and effective but offer nothing that we hadn’t already seen in season one.

On the plus side, we get to see more of Joe Wilkinson as a postman named Pat and Roisin Conaty as Daphne. The moments the show moves beyond Tony’s grief and onto their budding relationship are more entertaining, although begrudgingly predictable.

Worse still, the female side characters in season two are given unforgivably disappointing dialogue. In one scene, Tony’s colleague Sandy makes him promise to save the paper, just because she quite likes working there. In another, Matt’s ex-wife decides to go out with Matt just because another woman, Kath, is showing interest.  Kath spends the season pining after Matt, failing to pick up any social cues. Her only genuine moments are when she is bonding with Tony about the death of his wife.

You know things are bad when the best comic relief character is a drunk therapist obsessed with downing pints with his mates and chasing after women. It’s cringy to watch but somehow still better than watching Tony’s terrible office banter with his poorly-written colleagues.

The ending of season two is touching but given the state of the rest of the series, Gervais would have been better off concluding the series with season one.

It turns out that we will be getting season two of Netflix’ After Life. Ricky Gervais, who wrote, directed, and starred in this acclaimed black comedy, confirmed that he already started writing the second season of the series.

Gervais announced the news via a post on Twitter.

“Thanks again for all the love for #AfterLife,” Gervais wrote. “I have never had a reaction like this. The reviews have been great but the response from viewers has been f***ing amazing. And that means so much more to me. You are the best fans in the world. Oh, and I’ve started writing series 2.”

The first season of After Life premiered on Netflix in early March with all six episodes being available for streaming at once. The show starred Gervais as Tony, a man who struggles to cope with the death of his wife. After a failed attempt at suicide, he decides to change his approach to the world and starts saying a doing whatever he likes.  The cast list also includes Tom Basden, Tony Way, Diane Morgan, Mandeep Dhillon, and Ashley Jensen.

Although it was previously believed that After Life will have a limited run and conclude after season one, acclaim from audience and the critics obviously encouraged Netflix to order more episodes.

Ricky Gervais reckons that some people will love his new show and some will hate it.

If you haven’t heard already, Ricky Gervais’ latest comedy series After Life just landed on Netflix. It sees Gervais being the meanest and grumpiest we have ever seen him and even shows him smoking heroin in an attempt to shock viewers. The comedy actor is subsequently aware that the show won’t be up everyone’s street.

“It’s the furthest I’ve gone, the most dramatic, the darkest, the most uncompromising,” Gervais told NME. “It’s the comedy cast of the century even if you don’t like every single person in it. It’s amazing.”

He added: “Some people will love it, some people will hate it, most people won’t know it exists, so I’m all for that.”

Entertainment For Us said in their 3.5 star review: “Overall, After Life is depressing even by Ricky Gervais standards. At the same time, there are some positive messages to take away from the series and its awesome soundtrack, fantastic cast and genuinely sweet and funny moments make it worth a watch.”

After Life is available to watch on Netflix now.

Ricky Gervais and Netflix’s latest dark comedy had us experiencing all kinds of emotions and occasionally in hysterics.

The 6-episode series follows the life of Tony (Ricky Gervais) after his wife dies from cancer. Tony loved his wife tremendously and now that she’s gone, he is struggling to find reason to get through the day. To take the edge of, he says and does what he wants and considers it to be a “superpower” because if it all gets too much, he can just kill himself.

As the series unfolds, Tony discovers that being able to say and do what you want isn’t really a superpower at all. His behavior is at first predictably rude and funny but eventually Gervais manages to genuinely shock us. In a particularly dark scene, he smokes heroin with a homeless person and then when the man tells him he would kill himself if he had the money, Tony hands over £60.

As well as being deliberately shocking, there are moments which are in fact deeply moving and tender. When Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms” plays while Tony hallucinates lying on his deceased wife’s lap, a tear or two is justified. The home videos of Tony and his wife are also effectively used to make the audience appreciate just how precious what he has lost is to him.

All the way through, Tony is painfully sad and ignores the care of those around him. When he meets a sad widow on a bench in a graveyard, the advice she dispenses makes him consider the possibility that there might just be life after loss. While the final episode may have been a little too cheesy, there is some genuinely profound wisdom shared in their encounters. After all, happiness is still happiness if it’s someone else’s.

Comedy highlights were the mundane and ridiculous news stories characters came up with to get in the local newspaper and Joe Wilkson as a postman named Pat. Rosin Conaty as a proud sex worker and kind woman is also a highlight and reveals a new side of Rosin as an actress.

Overall, After Life is depressing even by Ricky Gervais standards. At the same time, there are some positive messages to take away from the series and its awesome soundtrack, fantastic cast and genuinely sweet and funny moments make it worth a watch.
